Yes the speed limit info is displayed on the HUD, and on the info screen in the dash. You just go into the idrive menu for each and select speed limit info, so you can have it displayed on one or the other or both at the same time.

Obviously, it's way cooler to have it displayed on the HUD. So I would recommend to order the speed limit display only if you're already ordering HUD.

Based on my experience I wouldn't order speed limit display in the UK. Today mine was showing the limit on the M25 was100 mph!! Anyone in the UK knows our max speed limit is 70!! Seems the system has a lot of data flaws and the camera doesn't always correct them.

Five Old Ladies with Speed Limit Problems
Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a new 5er puttering along at 22 MPH.
Says he to himself: "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back...wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?" "Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers." "Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly...Twenty-two miles an hour!" ...the old woman says a bit proudly and says "See, it shows it right here on my dash." The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 is the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her error and says she'll bring it into the BMW dealership as soon as possible. "But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask...Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken, and they haven't made a peep this whole time," the officer asks. "Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Highway 189."

I have a 528 with Nav on order in Canada so I haven't got my car yet to confirm how it works. Now I'm wondering, will I have speed limit indication on the Nav display? I hope so as I am used to that from my little portable Nuvi. On it, the speed limit information is all in the maps; there is no camera looking for signs. I didn't even know that some systems augment with cameras. In any case, I'm hoping my Nav system includes this useful information. Sharbot, I think you should have Nav in your Exec package. Does your Nav system display the speed limit?

In economical Belgium some of the speed limit signs (e.g. the school zone 30 km ones) are extra small (say, is there an EU standard on road signs sizes?) - my experience so far is that the system always fails to take these into account. On the positive, I've been delighted with the system's performance on motorways - regardless how obscure the placement - it always picks them up.

Hi, How does this retrofit work? Is it just a software update? I'm quite interested to find out how this retrofit would work. Anyone know costs? |

I have the Speed Limit info option and here in Sweden I think it is accurate 90-95% of the time. So far I have not understood why it sometimes shows an incorrect speed limit, but I guess it has to do with the Navi system submitting the wrong info. I have got incorrect readings from the system in broad daylight on the highway...Anyway it is a nice option especially together with HUD but not always that reliable!

I just noticed on the F30 configurator for the US that "Speed Limit Info" is now a standalone option at $100.
I wonder if that means it might soon become available for the F10 here?

You dont have to have HUD, it will either display in the "info display" or the optional HUD.

That would be awesome if someone could figure out how to get this onto US F10s. I understand that it uses the same camera system as the lane change detection thingy so might just be a software update if that's the case.
Unfortunately I did not get any of the driver assistance options ... any idea if that can be retrofitted? |

nicewonky,
I have a US F10 as well - I asked the good folks at DVD in motion and they have been working on the coding, but as of yet not a 100% solution. (I do not have any of the drivers assitance package items either). I've been wanting this feature as well simply b/c it is pretty cool, but since i get to ply the great roads of Europe, it's helpful to not drive at Warp speed thru restriced zones. the Euro-spec cars i have tried w/this feature (Merc, Audi, BMW) all had around a 90% success rate with the info - same as my Tom Tom. If DVD in motion gets this to work, i'll keep you posted. |

I found the part called 'Retrofit Speed Limit Info' for F10. It is 65502184753. I doubt there is any hardware in this 'part'. It's probably the software activation. The restriction is the prerequisite for this 'part', option 5AD, which is Lane Departure Warning System. The 5AD option, requires a few parts, one of them being the camera inside the rear view mirror housing. This camera is part 66519199305, called 'KaFAS Camera'. So now the questions I have and hope that some of the more advanced members like dvdinmotion or others would have input for: 1. Would it be possible to only activate the NAV speed data to be displayed in the console without having the other hardware installed? 2. Would it be possible to install the said KaFAS camera and activate the Speed Limit Info completely without the extra's needed for full Lane Depart system (rear bottom sensors etc.) ? If someone reading has an idea or suggestion who can know if this is feasible, please chime in. |

i'm in the Uk and I find it works most of the time but its certianly not 100% accurate.
A road local to me is 30 mph but in one direction it states the speed limit is 20mph and ion te oterh direction its 60mph. In his case I think teh erro is on the sat nav info as ehre are no road signs. It can be caught out on roads where there is a speed limit sign for the road leading off, so speed limit might be 50mph on te dual carriage way and 30 for the road leading off, the camera sees 30mph and displays that. It seems to have quite a wide angleof view the camera. it would be interesting to know where at any given time the information is coming from, eiterh the sat nav data map or the camera. (Is that info hidden away in any hidden menues by any chance?) At the end of the day you have to apply common sense and not rely on it 100%. |
