2012 5 series bad windscreen reflection
Hi All, Sorry if this subject has been discussed before but I just took deliverey of a new 2012 5 series without HUD and the reflection in the windscreen from the dash is terrible. BMW dealer claimed to know nothing about this but I see many forums of complaints. I actually think it is quite dangerous! Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this without having to buy a pair of polaroids which is ridiculous for a 35K car? Please help as makes driving experience very miserable in the sun

The indentation of where the HUD would otherwise be on the dash does cast a reflection. At first, it bother me a bit but I think I have gotten use to it, now I dont even notice it.

It's a confluence of several factors. The angle of the sun at a certain time of day makes this worse. The dash is pushed up against the windscreen and high. In my 3 series, I don't get this glare simply because the dash is not so high. In my opinion it's something that initially looks incorrect but basically you get used to it and forget it's even there. And yes polarized sunglasses are a must.

i tihnk these refelctions are something BMW could have avoided.
If tehre was no cetnral speaker on the dasj board, that would remove that one. ON the 7 series, if no HUD is speficied, there is just a smooth surface. With a HUD (whihc I have) you can still see a refection , you do get used to it but agree, BMW could have done better. It annoying when the E39 I had previously did not suffer from this. cars are supposed to get better. You'd have though staff desinging this shoudl refer back to older cars and make sure that they are not breaking something that worked preivously in a older generation of the car. perhaps the staff working on this changed and didn't even look at iolder models to make sure they were improving rather than taking a backward step. |

Thanks everyone the number of responses to this post clearly indficates that there is an issue, we should not have to "get used to it" or "buy polaroids "......BMW need to acknowledge that this is a bad design specification. Don't get me wrong the car handles perfectly but when we all pay so much for a car should we really have the need to discuss this irritating problem on a forum. This is my 4th BMW and the first that has this problem thanks to introducing HUD..... Is there anywone on this forum who works for BMW perhaps you have something to share with everyone....I doubt it though!

A bmw technician who drove my car agreed the reflections were particularly bad on this model but I doubt we'll get any official acknowledgement
It would be great if bmw had a way of contacting the designers and engineers who created these cars to get detailed raw info Any question we raise just get dealers usual responses or bmw usual sale stuff I would like to speak to the person who signed off this model and ask WHY? |

wen I bought my car 3 months back, I asked quite a few questions about the car and found that my salemans didnot know much about it, in fact I knew alot more about the car than he did which I thought was not great.
I don#t expect then to knwo everthing as they need to knwo about all models but I came away thinking if I were in his shoes, I need to know alot more about the product. I guess they don't need to as these cars practically sell themselves. I also sent a mail to BMW before I bought my car complainign about the steering, lack of feedback compared to my e39 and I got was the usual sales speek about saving CO2, blah blah blah. yes i know that There just seems to be a barrier betwen the consumebr and BMW headquarters. May be a magazine would have more clout? they are more likely to listen to them? |

I get the same dashboard reflection.
In addition, at times I get this really irritating reflection from the auto start stop light. Sometimes, you really wonder what are bmw test drivers doing with those test mule. I bet most can do a much better job than most of them. |

The worst is the new F30. I had one overnight for a loaner and the turn signal in the mirror was like someone was shining a flashlight in my face every time it blinked. Who the hell signed off on that design!?!?!?
If I end up getting an M3 and it has the same issue, I'll black out the back portion of the lens.... |

Try using some non glossy dash spray to reduce any glare. I have HUD but dont have the glare like you do.
