"While sales of the 5 Series GT haven't been particularly robust, the model has managed to outsell the previous 5 Series Touring since its arrival last year"
so let me get this straight, they replaced the touring with the GT, and the GT outsells the touring, inspite of the looks. then they decide to stop the GT and bring back the touring?? what am i missing??

F11 5GT
I must admit I always thought that the 5GT was an awkward looking vehicle but I must admit after I drove the beast it was stunning, the interior is brilliant with its large panoramic glass roof a great place to be on a long cruise. I suppose the American markets taste is different to Europe but look beyond the style and get behind the wheel I think you will be pleasantly surprised ( just needs a little bit of Alpina!)
Now decisions what shall we have? |

BMW are not just going to reverse a decision when the market for Premium large Wagons is all but dead. Audi and Volvo pulled their wagons because sales were going to the relevant SAV's , same as the BMW.
When BMW 5er GT arrived in the US Market. By the first year BMW sold the past three years combined of E61 units in it's first year. |

Negative, I've posted the numbers before (just can't remember which forum), the 5GT outsold the E61's best year...

Huh, turns out the numbers were in the linked news article: "BMW sold 2,848 GTs in 2010 and just 720 in the first four months of 2011. Sales of the 5-series wagon peaked at 2,351 units in 2005" Kind of looks like a 500 unit difference to me. The GT may not have sold as many as BMW were expecting, but these numbers speak for themselves.. |

E61 5-series wagon was butt f***ing ugly. Bringing 5 GT was even worse design-wise and it was just not as practical as the regular wagon. Bringing F11 touring however is a different story. It's beautiful, more practical and most importantly much nicer looking than the E-class wagon. |

Why do you think Audi have pulled out and Volvo too? the E-Klasse wagon is not successful especially with heavily discounted current ML-Klasse ahead of a new ML-Klasse this Autumn. You may say that BMW has lost focus and are losing it but when it comes down to it they know how to operate a business and know when to cut their losses. Do not expect any F11's maybe the next generation but it all depends. |

BMW can choose to bring the wagon over or not based on the business case. We may disagree but it is their decision. As it is our decision to stay with the brand or not. For many of the contributors it is obvious that bringing the F11 will make it more likely to stay with BMW.
What I dislike is the BMW cool-aid about the GT. We have been told it is better for us, it is better for BMW, it sells better than the E61 did, etc. First, as , I believe, Lee Iacocca said it is easy to sell the first 10,000 of anything in the auto industry. Especially when you flood the dealerships, advertise extensivelly, and then after a year or more unsold on the floor unload them with huge discounts. I never saw that kind of promotion for the wagons. And if other brands leave the wagon market in the U.S. this certainly is not a valid argument for what BMW does. If anything, there may be increased opportunity there. So, BMW, for the time being you can muddle with the GT alone and no F11, or bring the F11 and for the next few years sell both. Either way you can re-evaluate when the next gen cars are ready. We vote with our money. I, for one, will not be buying a 5GT or X5. |
