Replacement for ashtray on front console, near iDrive knob

The cars I've test driven all have an ashtray between the storage box and the iDrive knob. If you request for this not to be there, what will it be replaced with e.g. a coin box of some kind? Anyone have an answer and or pictures?

The ash tray comes with the smokers package. Without it the ash tray is replaced by a slightly larger compartment. You also get some more storage space in the rear doors without the smokers package as the ash trays there goes away.

Anyone have photos of the storage provided in the non-smokers package?

I took my ashtray out and the space is a bit more useful now. I have my garage remote in there (it's a small keychain type) and it fits perfect. The BMWs sold here don't come with the home link mirrors.

I didn't know that there was a replacement tray... I would like to see one and order if it's useful enough. I wouldn't use the ashtray compartment for small items without a replacement tray because there are gaps in the receptacle underneath that small items like coins might slip though.

btw. do not use the cup holders (in the front console) to store coins because the coin will go in to the folding mechanism and will jam. If a coin slips in to the folding mechanism, the lid won't stay closed or won't open if you close it with force. I tried this and don't recommend it.

I did store some coins in the remote fob/key holder built in to the cup holder but rattles quite a bit when driving. It is handy none the less if you use coins often. We use a lot of coins in Chile when traveling on highways as you'll encounter a toll booth every 30 minutes or so.

Without the smakers package, the tray works great for coins.

+1. Do you have a part number for the replacement tray?

Replacement ashtray.. aftermarket product.

Hopefully these boys will produce something for the F10.

I personally would like to see something that replaces the cup holders. I can't see myself using them in the UK and the space could be far better used for out of sight storage for wallet, keys, shades etc...

I don't think they can make anything useful out of our ashtrays. It's pretty small. Who knows, maybe they can get creative.

I would like to see the cup holders gone too... At least one gone and the other half as storage. My passenger can hold her own drink.

I didn't get the smokers package and mine has an ashtray insert. You can easily remove it and get a little more space in there, but at least the ashtray insert is smooth/curved so it's easy to get coins out if you do put them there.

+1 for my F10 550. I just took out the ashtray and the tray is larger. Perfect for coins.

That is perfect. The amount of space taken by 2 cup holders on my F10 550i is obscene. Like someone here said the passenger can hold his/her drink.

So get the MT. Of course, it comes with a giant ash tray, big enough for both your butts.

I have removed my ash tray inner. I now use it for my car key. I had to make a small thing to keep the key from sliding under the ash tray door. Believe me you struggle to remove it if goes there. The key fits perfectly in there.

What is the "small thing"? Can you explain and send a photo?

I'd like to understand why people want to put the car key somewhere in the car. There's a spot for it (in the automatics, at least) on those occasions when you need to leave the key for someone else. But otherwise? Doesn't that just defeat the whole point of the keyless start?

Well I used a mouse pad. I had to glue a peace on the one side to prevent the key from sliding under the cover.

Hope it helps

On my E90 I had a hole in the dash to put it in. With this one depending on the pants you wear it sometimes falls out and ends up between the seat and centre console. This happened twice. So I prefer to put it somewhere were I can get it again.
