Park assistent can be retrofitted, but not on xDrive cars.

Does anyone know why this option isn't available in Canada (maybe US as well)?

I tested mine the other day with my dad and he was pretty impressed. It works when there the lot has very decent and sufficient space. My view is that if you can't park with that amount of space, then you really shouldn't be driving the new 5er (maybe the 1 or the 3, or the e60 is more suitable).

It works in more tough situations, too.

When less room is available it goes through the drive-reverse cycle several times until it gets it right.

Other issues are with things that I wasn't expecting, such as choosing which among a number of free spots to use. The other "free" spots were small no parking zones in front of building entrances but the car didn't know that :-)

It's not available in Canada now because the 535 and 550 are only available in x-drive for 2012 and the x-drives use hydrolic steering.

Sorry to dig up this old thread. I have a F10 528xi 2012, I was told that my car has a electric steering, but I just couldn't get my park assist to work. Can anyone confirm whether I have this package or not? My 528xi is from US. with all the packages included except rear seat entertainment.

If I do have this option, could anyone please tell me how I can active this function? is the symbol on top of the car in top view always there? Or I need to do something to make it appear? Because I don't see the icon on top of the car in the top view.

Thank you

If I'm not mistaken, getting park assist would mean having to get electronically assisted steering right?

Seems like a cool toy to have but I would hate having to drive with assisted steering....

be extra careful on park assist

after purchasing my 535i less than 24hrs, being extra careful read up on it and looked at you tube even picked a good trial spot put the car in the mode and started reversing by itself and within seconds I hear a awful sound which is the rim being scrapped. got out and bad wheel damage. ouch had the wheel repaired the next day $75 i tried it since then being very careful after reading much success stories but you need to stay on the brakes and be prepared to break slowly. i tried again last night and if i did not break and correct would have scrapped.

Yes, it's wrong. Your xi has hydraulic steering and no park assist.

Look at the turn signals on the fender. In the silver part, is there a little rectangle? Or is it smooth. It needs the sensor (rectangle) to have park assist.

I have it on my F10 and I have the car for over a year. I also live in a city where parallel parking is common.

Having said that, how many times have I used the park assist? A big fat ZERO!

I had the same problem. They fixed it at my dealer. A software bug was fixed via an update and it is now working!

With difficulty. You would have to add the sensors and then have someone code in the functionality.

I have no problem parking close to the curb and perfectly parking in a single maneuver thanks to the side and top view cameras. It's much quicker to park yourself with the cameras than to use the Park Assist.

I'd try it out for myself, but my local dealer doesn't have a car with this option.
Before odering my present car i test drove a second hand 530D with park assist. It seemed to work OK, but it felt strange that i was buying a £40K car that could park itself, if for one reason or another it damaged another car...who do you blame...? will your insurance cover you...? in my opinion not worth the bother.

Wow, we're dredging up old posts here! I asked that question when I was getting ready to order my car, around 14 months ago (April/May 2011). I ordered my car with the manual transmission and park assist. I used it the first day I had the car, right down the street from my hotel in Munich. It was cool then, and it's been a riot to show people. There was one occasion where it fouled up, but I was able to see it wasn't aligning properly and I took over. There have been several occasions where I was able to get the car into spaces that it didn't recognize.

To me, it's worth the "oh-wow" entertainment factor. You may make a different choice.

Yes, it's almost five years since I posted the question and in 2012 I bought a one year old 640i which happened to have park assist fitted. I've tried it once and it works fine, but I didn't feel comfortable with the car steering itself and haven't used it since. Besides, as someone else pointed out, with surround view and the dipping side mirror, parallel parking isn't a problem.
