Center console cup holder issue
I've just bought a 2011 520d M Sport and have an issue with the cup holder in the center console, it doesn't seem to hold a can and I can't find a thermos cup to fit. Am I missing a simple trick here or do I have to buy the official BMW Thermos? Can anyone confirm that the official one actually gets held securely?
I'm not really bothered about cans but I do like to take a brew to work in the morning....... Thanks in advance, |

Of course it holds a can, you just have to push down a bit and the cup holders arms retract a little. They are basically spring loaded and adjust.

Along with the adjustable arms one of the holders is deeper than the other.

Your experience is mainly down to the awkward system they manage 1st time around, not that practical I like what they did with the new cup holders in the facelift f10, a straight forward system that works just like in the X3, and with no gaps, I had once a coin disappearing in the gap around the cup holder, it triggered rattling, my dealer removed the cup holders to get to the coin.
I guess BMW realised this and changed the cup holders with the facelift model! |

A method to the madness......
Coins, tell me about it! My lad sits in the front of my cars after disabling passenger air bag and his trick used to be to distribute the coins out of center console and put them where he thinks they might fit. Ended up with a pile of coins in my 12v socket!!

Can the cup holder in the manual transmission cars from the newer cars be retrofit into a 2011. I swear to god that cup holder is one of the most pathetic pieces of engineering I have ever seen.

I agree, over engineering for a complete useless system! I was wondering the same for my auto box, I believe a couple of threads exist on the matter. I am also wondering to keep cost down if possible can the Alum cover be transferred over from the old to the new cup holders cover, i.e. can the trim be transferred over, since it was an option with extra cost when ordered?
