It is a smart cable and can be reconfigured by the phone.

I've heard alot of people complaining that those app do not work (or very buggy) if you have iOS6.
is this true?

Thanks
I have all three (BMW Apps option / My BMW Remote / BMW Connected). The remote app works perfectly with iOS 6. I tried it with my iPhone 4S (which I updated to iOS 6 the day the OS became available), and more recently with my new iPhone 5. I'm able to successfully unlock my car, flash my headlights, sound the horn, and send Map data directly to the car. It all works just as before.

The BMW Connected app works as well, with the exception of the "Plugin" capability. I'm able to view my calendar on iDrive, and perform a host of other functions (facebook, etc.). What I'm NOT able to do is get access to my "Genius" playlists or other direct iPod-out functionality since BMW doesn't support that capability via the new Lightning connector.

I have a 2009 e92 without idrive, and when I plug in the lightning cable into the USB slot, it charges my phone fine, but I cannot control the iPhone or play songs, it says insert USB, like it can't detect the phone. Are all bmw's like this or is it just because I dont have idrive?

I just purchased the most basic Toyota tacoma (two door, four cylinder) truck for my company and was surprised that it connects with the iPhone thru Bluetooth completely for music, video and phone! And BMW is still playing around with cables?

Don't understand?

BMW does that too....the adapter is to further enhance the antenna signal, charge the phone, access BMW apps, etc....it's just another option in addition to bluetooth

How are you getting video through Bluetooth with an iPhone? I didn't think it can even get bluetooth still images, like a contact picture when someone calls you or album art.

I'm pretty sure BMW is capable but I didn't think the iPhone was

I had the iPhone4S cradle and was very disappointed that BMW have not yet made a iPhone5 cradle and it seems we cannot expect one at least for 6 months.

So, I set upon making one myself - not exactly a cradle but something to hold the phone and connect to the USB cable without having to fiddle with the tiny lightning connector and slot it each time.

Items used:
1. Base plate of the Cradle (blanking plate)
2. Original Apple USB to Lightning cable
3. Filing tools
4. Hot Glue
5. A bit of time...

I have used the original USB to Lightning cable for the connection and this provides all features except iPod Out functionality and antennae connectivity.

The cynics amongst you might say that one can just use the cable in the USB slot and get the same functionality. Technically you are correct - but what I wanted
- the convenience of just placing my iPhone5 and sliding it into the slot (almost like a cradle)
- not having to fiddle with the lightning connector each time (trying to fit in the iPhone)
- a more aesthetically pleasing solution

Photos attached should make it clear as to what I have done.

Happy to field any questions..

it is possible tu use this kind of charger...so the car usb remains free for music!
