Burnt smell (burnt electrical wiring..??)

After a good long drive, when I turned off the car, I stepped out and noticed a burnt smell. Does not really resembles burnt oil, but more like a smell of burnt electrical wiring. I didn't see any smoke, and after some time the smell went away. The smell seems to have come from the underbody of my car and not too much from the engine compartment.

So not sure if anyone else experience this, but would greatly appreciate any comments as to what this smell pertained to.

Thanks!

Is it diesel? If so, wondering if the dpf did a regeneration. Just my guess

I actually got the same smell the other day.. Thought my nose was playing tricks. I'll pay more attention next time I drive my car and see.

same here. but i was working on the engine for burnt oil smell. My vent hoses cracked and oil was driping down across the right head and on to the exhaust. i'm guessing a piece of brittle plastic fell on the exhaust. it stopped after a week.

I had this same thing happen to me last week in my 2012 535i and I know exactly what it was...the seat heater.

I was driving the other night with the seat heat on and started to smell a burnt electrical smell. I actually stopped the car and raised the hood to see if something was smoldering under the hood. I found nothing and kept driving.

Later, I turned the seat on and only the back of the seat got warm. The seat bottom never did until later. When it finally came on, I started smelling the smell again.

I took the car to my local dealer this week. They confirmed the seat was at fault and had to order a part from Germany. I'm not using the seat heat until a part comes in and it gets replaced.

I'll bet you all have the same problem.

Thanks! I'm bringing my car in for the N63 care service, so I'll definitely point it out. But I don't even use the seat warmer much (I live in So Cal and it's been pretty warm here), and I remember that time when I had that smell I wasn't using the warmer. Anyway, I'll see what the dealer finds out.

So turned out it was a faulty vacuum pump that caused the burnt smell. Took my car in for that care maintenance service and they replaced my pump, along with all injectors. Problem solved..
