F10 Park assist
Has anyone tried the park assist and, if so, what do you think of it.
I'd try it out for myself, but my local dealer doesn't have a car with this option. |

I've tried it a few time already. It's unbelievably accurate and squeezes the car into the tightest of spots, although I wouldn't recommend doing that, I am always scared if the neighbouring cars might scratch mine on their way out.
Its a must have option in such a big car, good value for money. |

I really don't get it why parallel parking is such a big issue. Back up parallel to the car in front of you. When the center of your rear wheels are aligned with the other car's rear bumper, steer all the way to the left. When the center of the front wheels are aligned with the other car's rear bumper, steer all the way to the right.
Perfect parking every time.

It work well. Although it is scary when it puts my wheels within 6 inches of the curb.

I got surround camera so I can park myself and atleast see whats going one all around me since the F10 is rather large size upgrade for me and I will be parking in crowded narrow streets.
I think surround camera is better than park assist (for me) but if I had to get park-assist, i would only get it WITH surround camera so I can see whats going on and intervene as needed.

Park Assist
I have the surround cameras and the park assist -- just fancied having the gadgets! Anyway, I find the park assist works about 50% of the time. The rest of the time it struggles to 'see' where the kerb is and either parks too far from it, or would run into it if I didn't intervene.
My dealer says they've upgraded the software...but if they have it hasn't helped! I would recommend it ONLY if you're terrible at reverse parking and tend to bash others all the time. If you're perfectly good at parallel parking now then save the money and get something else that's really good, like the lane change warning blind spot thing or the cruise with stop and go, both of which I wish I'd got. |

I ticked the box for the park assist for my wife, but I use it myself all the time.

I received my car in August 2010 with parking assistant. This option was ordered specifically for use of the second driver – my wife. After a short testing though, I was convinced suggesting my wife to use it would be a stupid idea…
It was making OK parking in only 50% of the cases. In the rest cases it would not identify spaces, or try to squeeze in where it was obviously inadequate space, or driving onto the kerb, etc. Recently, I tried using it again as a show off… and surprise-surprise it seemed to work fine. I should confess I upgraded the i-drive software in January 2011, which could have helped. Still, next time I would rather spend the money on some other option, rather than this one. Too many ifs and buts…. And after all it is not so cheap, it is almost the price of 4-wheel drive! |

The BMW car configurator doesn't rule out that combination. You need PDC front and rear though.

That's fine -- I've had PDC since 2000...love it; really miss having it on the front on the M3. (Yes, it's an ///M, but it's still a lower model than a Five.) I'm a gadget guy, so my configuration basically has about a Hyundai's worth of options. :-)

That's for when you're poking your nose out in traffic, will show a split screen view on the iDrive. Since it's about 2' further in front of your eyes, it's nice to have.

My park assist works well when there is enough space for even my wife to parallel park it. It refuses to acknowledge tight spaces and then I have to park it myself. Also it is slower than me to park and to avoid a line of cars behind me, I just take over the parking from it most of the time.
I now just use it as a party trick to show off to friends - it is rather surreal to see the car steer itself. |

The F10 parks well with this otherwise seldom used function.

I got park assist because my partner is only just starting to drive. I thought it would be handy and more fun than swapping seats with a queue growing behind the car in central London. Also I would dread the day hearing, 'honey, the curb made a big mark on the alloy wheel'.
I've used it several times but if it's not on automatically I've found the F10 very easy to manually squeeze into a very tight space quite easily. With the added entertainment value I would definitely buy this option again. Hopefully next time I get a new Beemer, PA will work remotely. |
