Worn piston rings on e60

How common are worn piston rings on an e60 ? If piston rings are worn I'm guessing 3k$ to fix ? Is any e60 worth buying if cheap enough with worn rings ? Any ways to fix without spending thousands ? I've heard forum members using thicker oil ?

No way to know unless you have a leak down compression test done to know the condition of each cylinder.

A car with bad rings will no only burn a ton of oil it will also be down on power. No way to fix it unless you tear down the engine. Running thicker oil is just a band aid fix that would only work if the condition isn't THAT bad.

Personally i would NEVER buy a car like this or any BMW that is out of warranty. Old Bmw's are cheap but just as expensive to fix as a brand new 70K+ one.

Alan is right, BTW - no way to tell how bad it is without a leakdown. Ask a Ferrari 355 owner about bad leakdown/compression numbers... it's one of their worst nightmares. Cheaper to address on a BMW, for sure, but you don't want a car with these problems.

You want a nice 328 with some money in the bank, Chad!
