Shadowline Trim
In my opinion, for such a seemingly innocuous option, shadowline trim totally transforms the appearance of the f10. At first glance eur500 for a few bits of exterior trim seems a waste but from pics I've seen on this forum that option (without shouting about it) really adds to the sportiness/agressiveness of the car. Do other members agree? Was this option even considered when you were mulling over you particular combinations?
I haven't seen an f10 with shadowline in the flesh but have decided to opt for it instead of USB- Dealer said I was mad not to go for USB and that shadowline trim had a tendency to go dull. I considered his advice carefully (for about 1 millisecond) and then ordered shadowline. |

do you mean the high gloss shadowline? the dealer is correct. it does get a certain tarnish to it over time. I keep my cars very clean but the only way to keep the high gloss looking good is to basically polish it every time you wash the car and that gets tiresome.
on my E92 coupe i probably did that twice a year, don't get me wrong still looks good but does definitely tarnish over time. my E92 is only 3.5 years old as well..... i have just ordered an F11 and this time i've got the matt aluminium ext trim which matches the std. roof rails so be keen to see how that weathers! |

As it happens, the M-Sport package includes it anyway but, if it hadn't, I would certainly have paid extra to get it. Roger |

Yea, I love the shadowline and have it on mine as well. Sapphire black with black leather, anthracite headliner and shadowline, needless to say it spends a lot of time in the garage! Black is killing me to keep clean, but I always wanted a black on black on black (lol) car.

Can anything be done to permanently protect the Shadowline Trim from fading?

I posed this question to several people on the Meguiars online detailing forum. They said to treat it like paint. It is much less likely to fade from the weather like rubber or matte plastic. However, due to the high gloss, it has a higher propensity to get scratched. I've polished it up using a DA and plastic polish and it looks amazing, but it's tricky work. Overall it's a great looking feature and adds a nice subtle detail.

treat it like paint. Clay, polish, wax. It's tricky because the edges are lined with rubber weather stripping. You have to tape that up before you go to work on it. After you peel the tape off it's a good idea to dress the rubber with a product like Mothers Back to Black or 303, or similar rubber protectant too keep it from fading, especially if it's in the sun a lot. Again, kinda tricky to apply. I use Q-tips.

Strange option politics though from BMW : in 2006 I ordered my E91, and had to pay for the chrome (I like chrome), but did not order it. Now ordered my F10, and got the chrome for free.
