Changing My Runflats to Non Runflats

Hi all,

I'm looking at changing my 19" RFTs & MSport mags to non RFTs. Would appreciate any thoughts on:

1. Any pitfalls / drawbacks in doing this?
2. Any changes to the car's Settings I need to make (e.g., the RFT monitor etc)?
3. Any recommendations for replacement tyres I should look at (I'm getting new mags & just need tyres for handling in dry & wet - no snow/ice etc where I am in Australia)?

I've got the BMW MSport rims 351M 19x8.5" frt & 19x9" rear & will replace them with new mags with rims 19x8.5" frt & 19x9.5" rear. Will also be buying the BMW spare tyre kit. I'm not a big fan of RFTs as they're hard to find here in Australia & more so outside the major cities not to mention their premium cost & being unrepairable if you have a 'flat'.

I'm doing similar -- gonna put winter tires on, and am interested in what is required.

What BMW spare tire kit are you talking about?

Anyone think these are a good idea? http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...Tire+Inflation

Here in OZ BMW sell:
- a Mobility kit - includes a pump & pressure pak of tyre sealant for a puncture (looks like the items in your link a bit), +
- they also sell a space saver spare kit (which includes a space saver spare tyre & a jack).

I ended up switching my Goodyear LS1's to Toyo Proxes 4 Plus tires. Since the XDrive 5 series doesn't run a staggered setup, you may want to invest in a Road Hazard Kit that includes a sealant, pump, and compact tire.

I went from 17" runflats to 20" non runflats and they are as smooth.
I will never buy rft again, especially in larger dimensions.

I would never change my tires to non-RFT. I can't picture myself driving at high speeds (like 250 km/h) in the Autobahn with normal tires... RFT are more rigid but that is only one disadvantage against the many advantages they have, from safety to convenience.

In Australia the fastest legal speed you can do anywhere is 110 kmh so it's not actually an issue.

Ordered a set of winter non-RFTs and a puncture/repair ket from Tire Rack. Any recommendations on a compact tire?

I live in Germany and plan on continuing to travel at a high rate of velocity on the autobahn with non-RFTs like I, and many others, have been doing for years.

You can repair these. I've had it done numerous times on my e60. I would suggest Pirelli zero Nero or zero Ross, about 430 a hoop. You will only need to reset your rft in I drive once fitted. Be carefull this doesn't make your car track over ridges on the road. The geometry of the cars suspension is engineered around its footprint, so a bigger Tyre width may affect it. 275 on the rear of my car is just mad! Frustrates me the f10 has no spare yet the e60 did.

It is always a personal decision. But you know what happens if you're driving fast (doesn't have to be at 250 km/h) and a tire blows…

A good tire does not blow these days.

If you think a RFT is going to save you at a high speed your operating under a false sense of security. I would take the handling and performance aspects of a non RFT over a RFT any day.

It is personal decision but to frame RFT as more safe on the autobahn over non-RFT is not accurate.

Yes, but no limits if not legal...

Do track pilots drive run flats?...

Someone told me today that when you swap out RFTs it can degrade the seal. I have my winter tires and was about to put them on my 351s -- I'm now having second thoughts. Any suggestions/opinions?
