Dinan DIY intake and intercoolers install (Pics)

Pretty long job and quite a few modifications to make to sheet metal and plastic housings.

Going to check zero to sixty times as with BMW stage 2 and dinan exhaust was obtaining 4.1 0-60. Will see if there is a difference with new mods.

If anyone is thinking of doing this, I am going to add to the dinan instructions and create a diy for people to follow. You also need to bleed the cooling system when done. Ignition on, turn on heat to max, fan in high, hit auto temp button, lower fan to low and then step on gas pedal for 15 seconds. Must fill resovior tank to the rim the first couple times you do the procedure. The dinan coolers eat up almost a third of a gallon of BMW coolant with a mix ratio of 50/50 with distilled water.

Bumper must come off for intake install.

Install instructions and Supplemental BMW TIS attached.

I will probably be doing the intercooler for my 535 but I think the install might be different from your 550. I'm also holding out because I'm not sure which brand I should go with. The only one I've seen available for my car so far is the one made by Wagner Tuning

If anyone is thinking of doing this, I am going to add to the dinan instructions and create a diy for people to follow. Had to go to www.bmwtis.com and pay thirty dollars for a one day subscription as there are torque values, fan shroud removal, and stock intercoolers removal procedures.

Total time for both dinan parts, with fabrication of oem parts take about 40-50 hours first time you take everything apart as it is a learning experience. Bumper must come off for intake install.

Will keep updating when my aching back feels better. Lol
Damn that's a lot of work! How hard is the bumper removal?

you have air to air intercooler, we have air to water... huge difference.

Bumper is actually pretty easy, just not dropping it since I have the OEM BMW front spoiler is the trick. It CAN be done by one person.

6 bolts on top, 3 inside fenders under bumper cover on each side, 3 bolts from fender wells on each side, 6 bolts across front, 20 bolts for lower engine cover and then disconnect Fog Lights and Parking sensors.

Install Final Pics

Ok, here are the "after" pics of the install. I dont have

You will also notice that the Drivers side Intercooler is about 3-4 inches towards the Passenger compartment. I studied this for like a half hour thinking something was installed wrong. But the Turbo hoses from Dinan match RIGHT UP to the intercooler, so it is right. Just and FYI if you install them and see a decrepency You are fine, it is designed that way.

Install Process

Here are some pics of the Fabrication process and how cuts should be made here and there. You will need a pair of single use hose clamps pliers. There are about a dozen clamps that must be tightened properly on this install.

Also, the Dinan installation kit ONLY COME with the hole saw, NOT the drill bit which mounts to hole saw. Check all of your screws and tools before starting.

The metal brace in picture #7 is the Coolant resovoir for the Inter Coolers. Dinan only shows the cut going back about an inch, but you have to cut off the 1/4 inch downward facing part of the bracket about 3 inches from the front to the rear.

I am going to modify the Engine cover some more as the Coolant reservoir is rubbing against it. Not shown in documentation, but about 1/8 should come off as seen in pic.

Yeah, I have a camera in the car with Record function. You can hear the turbos a bit now.

Adding installation instructions that are missing from Dinan instructions..

Thanks. Now I need to check numbers on a few 0-60 runs.

I want to add a K&N type air filter in place of the OEM filters as the Dinan is a supplemental air source to the factory air system. Would also like to find a pair of air scoops like i had on my 328 xi E90 to divert the air right up into the Dinan intake tubes.

Stinks KandN does not make a filter for these cars.

Is that an M5 cover? I think I saw them on ebay but didnt think it would fit our car. Right now, I was going to have my modified cover Carbon fiber dipped but THAT would look even better.

I took out that 1/8 inch notch above the Intercooler reservoir last night. Now it has clearance. Put that on the instructions not provided for install.. lol

That second one looks like a 6 cylinder. The oil cap on a 550 is up on the front right passenger side.

I appreciate the help looking for one. I would LOVE to find an engine cover for the motor! Right now, I have a shop that does Carbon Fiber weave dipping. I brought them one on my OEM BMW Carbon Fiber pieces to do a pattern match. Once we test dip something, I plan on doing the engine cover, the radiator support and everything I can which will look good under the hood.

If it comes out good, I will post the name of the guys who does EXCELLENT BMW custom work here in South Jersey. They are about 30 minutes east of Philly.
