ok newb question whats the difference?

Normal = Daily plodding
Sport = more engine power & chassis option if you have

now Sport + is this just sport without traction control or is there any more power given?

sport changes the throttle response, so if you press the pedal say 3 inches in comfort mode for a given level of performance, you'd only press it say 1 inch in sport mode.
the gearbox will straight away change up to give more revs and it hangs on to the gears longer for maximum performance.
it weights up the steering as well.

Sport + is the same but changes DSC to be in DTC mode instead.

All above is not assuming you have any dynamic suspension fitted.

The difference between comfort and sport is very obvious

that's the basics essentially.

The Driving Dynamics Control rocker switch next to the shifter lets you cycle easily through Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes to vary multiple settings.

The above chart is a bit confusing and not correct.

BMW use the terms Drivetrain and Chassis, when we have the ability to split the two in the Sport menu, configured on screen via iDrive.

Drivetrain = gearbox and throttle.
Chassis = suspension and steering.

I run with just the Chassis checked. When toggling from Sport to Sport+, besides activating DTC, it also adjusts the drivetrain (although not configured) to a sport setting.

I assume the OP listing Normal, Sport, Sport+, doesn't have the Comfort option. Comfort (in the list with Normal) indicates an active suspension option. (VDC or AD).

Early models with active suspension list Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+.
Later models with active suspension list Comfort+ Comfort, Sport, Sport+.

The above chart is taken directly from the official training "BMW Driving Experience" of the 2013. This way is how BMW explains these settings, so we can like it or not. I admit you are right: the word drivetrain should be replaced with chassis, sorry for screwing that up in fast translation. I did my best, and the rest seems to be fine. I also wish someone attends BMW training perfectly introduced in the proper language and than shares.

I've just recently bought mine, and it doesn't seem to have Sport + as an option. Is this a new thing?

Isn't that simply model and option related? 520d has dropped the SAT gearbox option, which could well be the reason.

Im loving the SAT gearbox, 8 speed and sits at 1500rpm at 70mph is fantastic, very smooth also

Yeah I have to admit it is a lot better than the 6 speed version that I had in the X5, in fact the best auto box that I have had to date. It is simply always in the right gear and never seems to get caught out, hardly ever use the paddles as sport mode is also perfectly configured for when you want some fun.

I would be interested in trying the newer version with the GPS link...

I have the GPS box, and although the effects are subtle, they are also brilliant. Bear in mind this is a 535d, so change points might be different for different cars...

If you (on a straight) just lift off and let the car slow down, the box will change down at just below 1000 rpm, giving about 1250 rpm. If you do the same coming into a roundabout, it will change down (just before the roundabout) a little earlier, giving you around 1600 rpm - leaving you ready for the roundabout. It's always in the right gear as you enter a roundabout.

Going up a motorway slip road, it goes into "frisky" mode, hovering around 2000 rpm minimum. As soon as you are on the motorway (as you cross the line) it scoots all the way into 8th. And as soon as you come off the motorway and get on a slip road, it drops a couple of gears.

It's all quite subtle, but the net effect is that it always appears to be in the right gear - you never seem to get that press - wait - drop a gear - go thing. Possibly the best feature on my car (joint with AD).

that sounds really good, its the little things that really make a good car

Sounds great though as those are all situations that I would either manually drop the gears or shift the box over into sport mode in order to prepare to accelerate or to get some additional engine braking

Indeed. Except there is now no need - it does it for you. With the exception of preparing for an overtake, I just leave it to do its thing and it works beautifully.
