Exclamation Twin turbo V8 confirmed for upcoming 2011 F10 M5!

As reported on Homepage.

The big question BMW enthusiasts have wondered about the upcoming F10 M5 was what powerplant it would receive - a twin turbo V8 (from the X5/X6 M) or the 5.0L V10. It had been reported (and seen) that BMW was testing both the turbo V8 and V10 motors in the F10 M5 test mules spotted in Germany.

Edmunds Inside Line is now reporting that BMW insiders have confirmed that the next F10 M5 engine will be BMW's turbocharged 4.4L V8 as seen in the current X6M / X5M. And although many ///M purists will lament the switch to a forced induction engine from BMW M's traditional naturally aspirated powerplants, this motor will pump out at least 555hp / 500tq (but possibly even more for the M5) while getting greater gas efficiency. This decision is in line with what has been confirmed for the next M3 as well - that it will be powered by a turbo V6 engine (instead of the current NA V8).

Its all good. You know they'll tweak that engine/exhaust for the M5 and it will be more than 550hp. M3 eater.

A TT V10 would have been more impressive. I'm sure they will raise the output to 580 hp to be at par with the Audi RS6. What a shame, the S85 has such a distinct sound that no V8 will ever be able to replace.

over 500 ft lbs of torque sounds good to me!!!

Imagine peak torque at low RPM's-that car will be a monster!

i agree, however dont lose hope, theres a guy here in miami whos on the 6speed forum that is supposedly rebuilding his m5 motor with a twin turbo system. i havent heard anything about it for a while but ill do some searching to see if anything comes up.

agree on every single point made in this post !!!

are they trying to keep down the development costs?
No new engine specifically made for the new M5 and probably the upcoming M6 ?

Turbo power is the easy way bmw and you know it.

I can buy a turbo car on every corner of the street just like i can buy a casio watch on every corner on the street. It s nothing special.

///M cars should be like mechanical watches a piece of engineering No bmw rather go the easy way. Shame on you bmw ///M. And you won t get one penny from me for this kind engine/car.

About every jap car has turbo.

///M has lost it. ///M Motorsport is gone ///M Marketing is the new ///M

EVEN tho the 550hp/500trq sounds VERY good to me, i do have to disagree to some extent with your post, yes ///M made NA engines for all of its cars, but times have changed and if BMW doesn't CHANGE WITH IT than you can say goodbye to the whole M concept all together, Besides since its a Turbo charged engine........I am pretttty sure tuners will come up with a software that will bump up the performance of that engine EVEN further.

ya these engines will definitely be pumping out at least 600-650hp with a year or so for tuners to understand them, sure the N/A engine is more liked and saying you have a V10 under the hood is more respectable, but this engine will definitely perform

It wil preform just like a GTR and evo s and other jap cars.

What do you think 4.4 liter Turbo is fuel efficient what a laugh.

If a rolex had a battery why pay premium.

An Turbo ///M car is as an expensive watch wich runs on a battery instead of piece of mechanical engineering.

I was hoping for the V8 TT! Can't wait to see some stats!

I'm thinking somewhere a little over 600 hp...

i disagree. its just adapting. America is ///M's biggest market. And with all these new mandates/penalties/extra gas guzzler taxes the same ///M car that we could buy for lets say $65k will bump up to $72k. and you can say you gotta pay to play all you want but people wont pay to play. They'll start looking at cheaper alternatives. And the ///M car is not an exotic its a mass produced daily driver and quantity counts. Besides BMW looks like theyre doing well with the turbo cars, and its not their first rodeo.

Oh i think when tuners get a hold of it with a Few minor Bolt ons and a tune this thing can come somewhere close to the 650 whp 700+ torque numbers. If my little straight six with its tiny turbos is doing close 400 whp/ 400 ft lbs. that V8 with much bigger turbos will do alot more.

Hopefully they kick the revs up. The X5m's 7k redline is pathetic.

I guess I was a minority in hoping for a TT V6. :sigh I'm really looking for lightweighting to become popular in a big way. There's really not a whole lot I can do with 550hp here in the U.S. There is, however, quite a bit I can do with a car that can pull >1G in stock trim.

TTV8 was a logical choice. Four vehicles will share this engine which keeps developmental costs down for BMW and tuners alike. Never know, maybe this will become like AMG's 6.3 and end up in the next M3 as well.

I agree with the sentiment that many have had regarding turbo vs NA though I'd counter that turbo engines can be exotic in that, in extreme forms, they can produce very unique power/torque curves as well as achieve exotic specific power numbers.

My own dream is of a 3.0L tri-turbo V6: two small single scroll turbos (like a TD03), one working off of each bank, and then a single large twin scroll turbo (like a GT35 or GT40). Said engine would make ~300lb/ft. down low (~1500rpms) and be capable of big power up top (~700bhp). In other words, it would be an absolute friggin beast. Plumbing might be a tad complicated though....
