I own a US spec 550 (May 10th build week) but took delivery here in Germany where I live. I am going to play closer attention this weekend but I have noticed no pulling to the right, after reading this thread I cant help but feel I am in the minority on this. I also cant determine a true common variable for those that have the pull.

I will be interested to see how fast BMW corrects this issue or will it become the F10's hpfp, which I had to replace 2 on my ex-535.

I just got back from Euro delivery and I noticed it on my new 550i, I had the same problem with my E60 550i and just learned to live with it after many attempts of resolution with the dealer. I am glad someone else is experiencing this issue and not just my imagination, my E60 had the Active Steering, I always suspected that had something to do with it, my F10 has the integral active steering, do the other posters have this option?

Does anyone have an update on the 'software fix' that was discussed here last week?

Re: software fix

I got a call from the dealer today that they had word from their rep that the software fix arrived at BMW NA and it had been tested and it did not solve the problem! They are back to the drawing board - square one! Seems like they don't have a car that they can work with in Germany? What a joke this has become.

What options do we have in this situation? As long as they keep saying they are 'working on the fix,' we are forced to sit and wait. At what point, can we pursue lemon law, etc. My patience is wearing thin...

There are people with equal or more relevant experience than me, but mine (with BMW and others) has been three failed attempts to fix and/or 30 days out of service in a 6 month period.

So you can leave your car with a dealer and demand a fix, and if they haven't repaired it in 21 or 30 days, you can pursue lemon law.

Thanks for the info guys; I might pursue this soon. The problem I may run into is that since this is a 'known issue,' the dealership won't bother trying to fix it a 2nd and 3rd time. I might have to go with Lindros2's recommendation of leaving the car at the dealership and demand they attempt to fix it.

I've filed formal complaints to BMW, I've spoken with several BMW representives, I've filed complaints on various consumer websites...and I still haven't heard any concrete evidence that BMW knows about the issue and is working on the issue. The only info I get is right here, and has been very valuable. So thanks to everyone who is providing updates.

Is it a slight pull or very noticeable even with your hands on the wheel?

It doesn't yank it out of your hands (it least in my case). However, if you let go of the wheel it'll fly to the right in no time flat.

Traditional hydraulic PS would give you a fight if it had a pull issue. But the electric seems real light. So at least that's a good thing in this case.

Very frustrating to think that a $70k car I just ordered may very well have steering problems and that a company known for it's precise handling cars would chalk it up to a crowned road or a safety feature that would preferably put you into a tree instead of an oncoming car. I test drove the dealer's 550 and it pulled right - not subtle at all. I'm at the point that I'm planning on calling my salesperson and informing him that if my car pulls, I won't sign...period. Maybe BMW will get the message then. It's a Sept. build. I hope that they've spent their break time figuring out this most concerning problem. Sorry for the rant.

Let me put it this way - when you're cruising straight ahead with one hand on the wheel, it'll be your left.... That was the case during an extended test drive for me.

I went back down to the dealership and talked to another shop foreman (2 weeks ago). This was after other my initial communication (2 weeks prior to that) and he said they were definitely aware and that BMW was communicating a fix within the next 7 days (2 weeks ago) and since then I haven't hear back. I've left 3 messages and not even a return call. I guess it's time to go down there and talk to the GM! I at least deserve a call back to tell me they don't have a fix!
Thanks for all the info everyone!

Most states tell you to notify your dealer in writing - via certified mail - about the problem, and they want proof that you did.

btw - how'd you go about sending a formal complaint to BMW? Did you send them a letter? Let us know - we'll bombard 'em! If you haven't filed a complaint over at NHTSA -

Well, 'formal complaint' may not have been the best way to word it. I started off with verbally complaining to the dealership until I realized that was getting me nowhere. I then went online and emailed BMW with my complaint. I believe I used the email address on their website. Days later after I had my car serviced, I received a survey. On the survey, you can check a box to have the corporate office of BMW notified. I checked that box and made it clear what my issues were. I then had 2 representatives call me (one due to the email and one due to the survey), but neither could answer anything for me. One of them called me back a week later to give me a vague update that they were 'working on it.' My dealership saw that I checked the corporate office box on the survey, so the service manager emailed me immediately. Since then, I've been in weekly contact with him, but it's always me reaching out to him. And I'm always the one giving him information (thanks to this forum).

I've kept every email knowing that I may need to document my case. It's been 70 days for me now. I was originally told it was an 'upper control arm' issue and would be fixed within 30 days. The bottom line is this is a safety issue and it needs to be resolved. I wanted to avoid the time and energy it will take to fight this, but I've been sitting on this long enough.

It's too bad too, because I really do love this car.

My dealership just laughs at me when I tell them this is known issue and there maybe a possible software fix. I showed them this forum and the service advisor said "people put all kinds of stuff on the internet". The car is driving me crazy, missing my 335i.

I agree that people put all kinds of things on the internet. But in this case...it's a legitimate issue. And I'm not giving up. I spent this morning on the phone with Florida's Lemon Law office. I figured I would go to the source first to ask for advice before I pursue the lemon law. After that call, I am now convinced that this is the route I need to take. I'll keep everyone updated...

How ignorant the are!
What they SHOULD be doing, and this is important, is to report your complaint as a PUMA case (a BMW system where dealers report issues...) so that BMW become aware of that there are more cars out there with the same problem.

Yeah, when I had mine serviced, they referenced the PUMA case.

WOW. Im receiving my F10 550 later today or tomorrow and I already have new wider wheels in a bigger rim size. I will drive them both and see if there are any differences in the drive quality or any different in pull factor. I am putting on a staggered set of Breyton Race GTS's with 20x8.5 up front and 245 tires and in the rear they will be 20x10 and 285 tires. I hope they fit without any rubbing since they were fine with the old 5 series but I believe this is a smaller wheel well. We will see what the outcome is and I will post my findings here. I think that the wider tires may provide some type of adittional steering firmness but lets see what happens.

When you pick up your new 2011 550i today I would strongly suggest that you drive it around well before you switch out the OEM rims and tires and make sure you don't have this pulling problem. Some dealerships will blame pulling on the different rims and tires you put on, and that may become a nightmare for you. Just my Two cents.
