Question for European owners with "Internet access" option

Could someone with the "Internet access" option please enter this URL using the iDrive and tell me what you see? (I don't think we get this option here in the US).

The URL to enter, exactly like this, is:

javascript:document.write(navigator.userAgent);

It should print some long mumbo-jumbo like this:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/11.0.696.0 Safari/534.24

I'd be interested to know what the exact string is for the iDrive browser.

Nothing in particular... I work on the Chrome team @ Google. I'm interested in what rendering engine and platform they're using. My guess is WebKit and some flavor of Linux, but I could be wrong. :-)

I actually have a F10 on order myself (550i, most of the options) but we don't get this option in the US I don't think. Not sure why not, seems like it could use your tethered phone for network.

On the iPhone you have to have internet sharing activated in the menu, and you can not do bluetooth music streaming at the same time.

That's weird iDrive runs on top of VxWorks.

Do you think that BMW could utilize a two stage solution. The browsers in the cars are always routed via some central service...extended security etc.

Raises amongst other things some privacy issues...

2001S15 I will get my F10 (with Internet option) in late april. I am also a software developer/consultant and would be happy to help you out...it would be interesting to learn more about the solution bmw.

Just got my car back from the dealer today. They did a software update and now internet is working. Just had to activate internet sharing on my iphone 4, and then go to BMW-services in the main menu and then push update services.

Works really nice. Now I have to check if it´s working on the rear seat entertainment also+

cidair: So the car is using iPhone 4 instead the built in sim in the car to access Internet? I'm guessing that's due to the fact that we don't have the ConnectedDrive / BMW assist subscriptions here in Sweden.

Oh, I didn´t know there was a sim in the car? What does that one do?

To use the internet you have to use your smartphone as a modem ( internet sharing in the network menu ).

Is that in the bluetooth options ? I only have the office and audio streaming options there..

Hi, I have ordered Nav media professional on my X3 - it will have the subscription service. The configurator is now showing option "614 Internet". I can add this now, but could I wait and get the option enabled later by the dealer? And will it use the sim or the tethered phone to access the internet? What are the limitations of the browser - how easy to navigate etc)?

On 4.3.1 you find it under settings and then it should be fourth on list under airplane mode, personal hotspot. See pic below. I believe in some countries it does not work, but it all depends on the carrier.
