well - it's here - first impressions count and it looks the business.

arrived 8am on a trailer which seemed respectful but (100+ miles on the clock)

wanted the mirrors to auto fold - and they do if you hold down the badge to lock

see you later!

100+ miles on the clock? What was the dealer's explanation? Personally speaking, I would find that unacceptable on a new car and I wouldn't have taken delivery.

Nor I. Nevertheless, enjoy your car.

Phew. Mind, I'd be pissed off with such a low amount of fuel too!

brain dumping for now... need to do some work....

100 miles covered this morning - suitably impressed I have to say with my first BM.

After playing have set sport setting to chassis only for now which I find very comfortable, no steering vagueness that others reported, good for handling, and gives the 8th gear economy. Plan would be to go manual or to reactivate drivetrain settings on the fly when needed or go the whole sport+ hog. Early days, early thoughts.

Interested that I couldn't connect the bluetooth audio and USB phone audio interface with my (i)phone(4) at the same time so that I could swap easily - but as I'm getting album artwork (even without a Nav package) and steering wheel controls and charging plugged in the I can do without the bluetooth stream (although its a cool feature).

I tried to open a conference call and found that the DTMF(?) tones for the pin number didn't work. Is that either expected or switchable?

Lots of nice glances at the car

Well 250 miles so far and smiling - a lot

So many questions - so little help in the owners manual though. Some things are in the onboard version - others I'll have to try and work out.

First of all my initial thoughts on my spec

Sophisto Grey 2 - hit!
Oyster / Black Dakota (std) Leather - hit!
Auto Sport transmisison - hit!
Variable Damper Control - no idea - but very happy with the ride and handling in sport
Active Steering - no idea - but very happy with the handling and turning circle
Dynamic Pack with W type 332 19" wheels - lovely but made to look small by the arches
Visibility Pack - not convinced that i have active lights or beam assist yet - maybe it was too light to notice so far
Air Con Extended features - auto recirc hit!
Grey Windscreen ShadeBand - really? well if I look closely...
Delete Smoker Pack - surely they can package a non-ashtray and the front stow area more usefully?
Model Delete - i like it - some won't
USB audio something.. was worried about this one without Nav - good for iphone
Fold Dim Ext Mirrors - hit! foldy mirror look I like
Lumbar Support - getting old!

So questions I will research include already..

- why does the radio continue until you close the door? I play too loudly for that
- why is there an aircon timer?
- what are additional indicators?
- where is the residual heat function?
- how much @ how fast does speed related volume setting change?
- when I voice dial - is the phone or the car phone book answering?
- what are the auto relock scenarios and dangers?
- how I lock the car when I'm in it without getting the key out?
- can I unlock the other doors when I pick someone up without getting key out?
- why did the passenger seat back suddenly 'unrecline' with no-one in it??
- what does SPORT drivetrain consist of if I deselect it?
- why is there a pimple on the centre screen right hand plastic bit??
- is S/W 003.004.037 (or was it 031?) the latest?
- how can you get back to S(7) after manually overriding to M(8)?
- data transferring from device seems confused with some other data option?

further thoughts
- yes go for chassis only in SPORT (allowing for D8) and move gear lever to left when S7 required

Haven't noticed that - sorry, can't help
- why is there an aircon timer?
I think that's what previously was known as Residual Heat, but now with a timer
- what are additional indicators?
Pass
- where is the residual heat function?
See above
- how much @ how fast does speed related volume setting change?
Never noticed it changing, so it must be pretty good
- when I voice dial - is the phone or the car phone book answering?
Pass
- what are the auto relock scenarios and dangers?
Pass
- how I lock the car when I'm in it without getting the key out?
Press the button between the centre face level vents
- can I unlock the other doors when I pick someone up without getting key out?
As above
- why did the passenger seat back suddenly 'unrecline' with no-one in it??
You had the Invisible Man in the car
- what does SPORT drivetrain consist of if I deselect it?
It depends on whether or not you have Adaptive Drive and what option you select - 'Chassis only' alters roll bars, dampers, and steering response. 'Drivetrain only' alters throttle and shift response and restricts 8th gear. Personally, I have sport configured to chassis only and when I want the lot, I select sport+
- why is there a pimple on the centre screen right hand plastic bit??
It's a camera linked directly to BMW to see how often you pick your nose
- is S/W 003.004.037 (or was it 031?) the latest?
Pass
- how can you get back to S(7) after manually overriding to M(8)?
You have to move the gear selector sideways

- why is there an aircon timer?
ah - found in manual it is to open the airvents for cooling
- what are additional indicators?
Pass
- where is the residual heat function?
ah - found it is the right side of the fan button on the driver side and works if under 25 degrees outside
- how much @ how fast does speed related volume setting change?
Never noticed it changing, so it must be pretty goodagree

Personally, I have sport configured to chassis only and when I want the lot, I select sport+great thanks - not explored sp+ yet - so selecting S on gear lever when wanting that - which suggests I have all of the sport features then - which is what I hoped - although VDC and active steering may or may not dilute that

Passit is 031 - not checked if latest
- how can you get back to S(7) after manually overriding to M(8)?
You have to move the gear selector sidewaysand then back again to get to S7 then

The radio continues unless you press the Start / Stop twice (one to stop engine; one to switch off accessory circuit). However, if you lock the car then the radio etc. will go off.

Additional indicators - I'm guessing you mean the setting that pressing the indicator against the pressure without going over-centre, will flash the indicators three times for lane changing.

Voice Dial - Your contacts are transferred from the phone to the car and the car synthesises the dial commands from the address book (*at least with Pro Media)

Auto Relock - if you open the car with the fob but don't open the door within two minutes the car will relock itself. Good idea should the unlock be accidentally pressed in your pocket whilst inside and the car on the drive, say.

"Pimple" near the screen is a light-dependent resistor to dim or brighten the screen depending on ambient light.

bluetooth stream would be nice on short / broken trips though...

That's what I initially thought, but nothing happens to the screen brightness when you cover it with your finger.
This has been previously, and equally inconclusively, discussed in another thread.

It does if it's dark (i.e. the screen has already switched to night mode which it does by virtue of the sensor for the auto headlights).

If the screen is in night mode (i.e. the colours have all changed), and you cover the pimple completely, it goes very dim in the night mode colours.

Ah-ha, sounds like there's a conclusion after all - not that I'm doubting you, but I'll try it out next time I'm driving at night.
