BMW has a habit of underrating their cars' official power and performance figures. This trend continues with the F10 M5 which is officially listed as achieving 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, but has now been tested by Car and Driver as hitting 60mph in just 3.7 seconds! It also covers the quarter mile in 12.0 seconds at 122mph [from the C&D December 2011 issue].

Compare this to the 2009 E63 AMG, with which C&D achieved a 0-60mph of 4.0 seconds and quarter mile of 12.5 seconds at 115mph. Also compare to the 2012 CLS E63 AMG with performance pack with which C&D achieved 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and a quarter-mile of 12.0 seconds

What about the F10 M5's most direct competitor - the 2012 E63 AMG? Since the 2012 E63 AMG shares its architecture with the 2012 CLS AMG, it should post nearly identical numbers (3.8 seconds / 12.0 seconds) when equipped with the Performance pack.

This should appease all the bench racers, 0-60 zealots, and quarter mile fans who have derided the F10 M5's officially listed performance figures as being inferior to its most direct competitors.

What rockets the M5 to these amazing figures? The S63Tu engine. Read all about it at the following links:

122 MPH trap speed is insane for a stock car!!!

If drivers can reproduce that on a regular 1/4 mile track then this will be an absolute monster. Then when a tuner gets his hands on it...

C&D always pulls out faster 0--60 times than any other magazine due to the rollout, but regardless, that 1/4 mile time is blazing fast for a stock car.

Should be interesting to see what the F80 M3 does in a couple years.

Hate to say I told you so...but....

When an X6M with pretty much the same engine rips off 4.1s....what did you expect? The 4.4 time was definitely off and I expected it to be sub 4 seconds but 3.7 is ridiculous.

As much as I want the F80 M3 I hope it can shread numbers like this one otherwise I may look into a CPO M5 down the road :O

DAMN. That trap speed tells me that car is definitely a 11 second car. Unbelievable to think an M5 would give a Z06 a run for it's money. Also, check out that 0-100 time. That would run door to door with most of the newer Ferraris.

No surprise here- the thing is a beast and anyone that has issues with it either can't drive OR has a personal agenda. In spot plus it is barely tamable on the street.

The best M product ever. Board meeting with colleagues to the track any day.

Wait until the 'Ring time comes out....

I agree, although these numbers are by car and driver which have proved over and over to be rather on the fast side. If the numbers are true, this car would give the GTR a run for its money on the highway.

I bet overall one would have alot more fun in smaller more agile M3 than this huge beast. And I would hurry before the new M3 gets here with its turbo engine and its huge size (from spy pics). In a mountain road i would take the M3 in a heart beat

This should silence all the detractors of using turbos in an M car.
