F10 on F01 311's

Hey all,

I had asked a question on a set of wheels 2 or so weeks ago, so I thought I'd show the route I went in the end. I also don't want the folks that helped me out think I hadn't taken their advice to heart.

I wanted to go the monochrome route, so I sourced a set of 21" BMW 311 rims from a 7 series (F01) and had them powder coated space gray. They were a direct swap and definitely fill the wheel well better. They have Hankook Ventus tires fitted to them in 245/35/21 (front) and 285/30/21 (rear).

Just as a disclaimer. The car needs to be lowered and badly needs a wash. What can I say, I've been slacking lately. I should have KW V3s on it next week, just trying to find an installer I can trust without costing an arm and leg (highest install quote was $854; ouch!). All the reflectors are on the agenda as well, but suspension first! Well without further delay here's the pictures.

Some performance brakes with a different color for calipers (piano black) will match very well the wheels

F10 on F01 311's

Well here she is lowered on the KWV3's. I couldn't find a place I trusted to do the job for a reasonable amount of money, so in the end I did it myself in my driveway

So to answer some questions. They are F01/F07 21" rims. The offsets are ET25 front, ET41 rear (stock). They are a direct swap. Tires sizes are listed in the first post. They don't rub at this height.

Thanks to LACSTER for the coilovers, obviously they're awesome!
Thanks to hamanncheese for the DIY instructions. I wouldn't have tried without your DIY.
Thanks to everyone else for your ideas and advice.

When I saw your first pics I thought to myself "why?". The wheels didn't seem to go with the car. Now that I see your new pics, I can see why. Wow! That looks sweet! Totally different from what I am used to seeing around here. Everything flows very nicely. Congrats.

I really do. It's nice to feel the road through the steering wheel. Stock the car is just numb, now I can feel the ripples and transitions in the road. There's so much more feedback. It also tips into corners flat, rather than wallowing like a boat on the stock suspension (I didn't get the fancy suspension). Thanks again, the KW's were well worth the money!

Wasn't too thrilled about how it looked in the first pics without the drop, but I gotta say it looks great in the last pics with the drop.

I completely agree with rem here, I was not sold on the first pics but the 2nd set they look great! I think it is the quality of the pics maybe? The 2nd really bring out the color of the paint on the car and wheels.

Perfect drop, great looking 5er

(Also get rid of those reflectors )

The car looks great!! Very sharp and understated? Are you using the tire sizes from the F01? Any issues with the larger diameter? Any rubbing? How is the ride?

Great looking car!! Congrats!!

Jo,

I replied to your PM but in short:

Yes, the rims and tires came of a F01 7-series.

I've had no problems with the larger diameter. My dealer was able to do an alignment on the car with no issues.

I ended up with minor rubbing during aggressive driving so I ended up raising the car approximately 1/8". I have no rubbing issues no matter how I drive now.

The ride is significantly different, but that's more to do with the suspension rather than the rims and tires. The wheels and tires had a minor impact on the ride quality. I could feel the bumps more, but it wasn't a teeth jarring change.

I'd definitely do it again if I had to.

Sean
