Talking 2012 CIC - High NAV Upgrade via DVD

My 10/10 build has NAV version "112091.0.10 Ė Road Map North America Premium".

Wanting to upgrade to the just released 2012 Version, I was informed by Momentum BMW West here in Houston, and Tischer BMW (GetBMWParts.com), and the maker, Tele Atlas, that no 2012 NAV DVDís exist, except for CCC based systems, and that the ONLY way to upgrade is through a Dealer NAV Software Update, which my dealer quoted $385 to do. I took a chance anyway and ordered though my dealer P/N 01990037287, "DVD ROAD MAP NORTH A", which has no version specified, hoping it would be the 2012 update. They called today to let me know that it came in, and when I asked what version it was, I was told 2011.

I thought about not even picking it up since I was only interested in 2012, but for $7, I figured I would pick it up instead of sticking the dealer with it and pissing them off. Lo and behold, the package actually contained 6 discs in a stack, with 3 DVDís for 2011 on top, and 3 more for 2012 on the bottom.

Being the cynic I am, I presume that their denial of the upgrade DVDís existence is nothing short of a money grab considering my dealer wants $385 for the NAV Software Update, not to mention my car for a full day, which puts $185 in the pocket of Tele Atlas for the license (Dealer's cost for the FSC Code), and $200 in the dealerís pocket for the upgrade installation.

So, I'm half way to my 2012 upgrade now that I have the "nonexistent" DVD's, and I just need an FSC Code. My dealer will sell the FSC code for $229, which with the $7 I paid for the actual DVD's is still $149 less than $385 Dealer NAV Software Update, although I am now working on getting the FSC code for still much less than that.

When your told you can't upgrade your CIC based NAV system via DVD, and they don't even want to order it, you can show them this:

How did all that cost $7? Because no activation code?

And how do you upgrade using the DVD's?

That's it. All you are paying for is the media for 3 (or 6) discs.

When you put disc 1 in the DVD drive, it pops up on the screen asking you if you want to update, and after you select yes, it prompts you to enter in the FSC Code.

When you get this running, I'd be very interested in hearing 1) how and 2) if it helps with the terrible routing logic of the 2011 vintage.

Will do as soon as I source the FSC Code and do the 3 hour upgrade.

Thanks. I have already received a NAV FSC quote along with some other options from Alex with Bimmer Retrofit, and I may very well order the FSC Code from him, although I am waiting on some information on one other possible source.

It's running! I ordered my FSC Code from Patryk with Bimmer-Tech yesterday, and this morning when I got up it was waiting in my inbox, and I successfully ran the update off my original DVD's.

It took about 2-1/4 hours to complete. Plan on swapping DVD's around the 35% and 75% mark.

I have not played with it yet though to see if there are any improvements to the routing.

yep, that's what I got as well.
Hey, is your navigation automatically zoom in & out when it comes to an exit or major road crossings, or speed lowers?

My old version didn't. I have not driven anywhere yet since I upgraded this morning, so I don't know about the new version.

Are you seeing that now that you've upgraded?

Oh. So this is something you were hoping to gain in the new version?

no no, I hoped only for the map. Just was wondering if I maybe missed some settings or my navigation software version is outdated.
Btw, do you know how to renew the software itself?

I'm not sure I understand the question. If you mean the CIC firmware, AFIK that has to come with an ISTA update from the Dealer or an Indy's ISIS system.

My dealer won't even offer to do it as a paid service. Basically, if ISIS says you do not need an upgrade, they won't do it. My car is still at ISTA 40.x., but I have an appointment for the 21st to hopefully have it brought up to ISTA 45.x., and that took a whole lot of convincing based on Bluetooth connectivity issues I've been having and the fact that my current ISTA version is holding back my Combox at version TX 2.6.4 / MX 2.5.21 from being updated to TX 3.5.4 / MX 3.5.4. That's a whole other thread though:
