Cup holder lid
Does anyone else find the cup-holder lid (the one just under the air con controls) to be really temperamental?
Sometimes it won't open, other times it won't close, other times it works perfectly. If it's just mine then obviously it can go get checked out, if it's a general annoyance with people I may not bother. |

Yes; it may not be the same cause as yours, but I had coins in there and also had the cable for my cell/mobile tucked away in there. Either way, they interfere with the mechanism for opening and closing the lid... check for foreign objects... Now I put coins in the ashtray (I don't smoke)...

Nothing stuck in there, it's all down to the latch which looking at it isn't any different to a biro pen.
I've tweaked things a little, it looked like the 'pin' was getting stuck in the groove so I've scraped both with the flat of a screwdriver to clean the surfaces up - it seems to be working much better now. I'll keep the weekend booking just in case ![]() |

Most of the retrofit covers for other models come from BMW with quite a large dab of white grease on the mechanisms.

Yeah, there was plenty of grease on it but I squirted some lithium on as well for good measure. Even then it was like the pin was getting stuck at the top of the groove, maybe there was a plastic spur from the mold.
Either way, much improved now. |

I have the same issue...closing works...doesn't open properly. I am taking my car tomorrow to have it replaced. Service department acknowledged the issue and mentioned that they have replaced it on few cars. |

Yep, an interesting thread...
My Oct 11 F10 has a cupholder lid that now needs both hands, one on each corner, pushing down hard, to open. It closes OK. I just dont bother trying to use it (it looks best closed anyway), but I should really book it in to the local dealer sometime to get it fixed/changed. Will be interested to follow other peoples experiences in doing this. |

defects
My cup holder lid opens fine ... but it was damaged. Bought new (2012 535i) with a scratch, which the dealer promised to replace as soon as they ordered a new part.
The new one arrived ... scratched. Apparently they can't get a new cup holder lid without a scratch. Curious to see how many they will need to order to finally get one in good condition. |
