First F30 335i (N55) Dyno Results Are In. Also Underrated From Factory.

We bring you the first dyno results from a 2012 335i (F30) sedan, performed by Challenge Mfg. USA (GTM_Challenge) on their recently delivered 335i. The F30 335i is powered by the N55 6-cylinder TwinPower twinscroll turbo engine and its factory quoted power figures are 300hp / 300lb-ft.

The 335i N55 dyno run resulted in 270whp and 273lb-ft torque. Note that the dyno was performed on a AWD Dynojet with linked AWD rollers. On a normal rear-roller-only system the numbers would be slightly higher (probably 5-10hp) given the less roller weight that would need to be moved.

What does this translate to in terms of crank HP (for comparison to the factory quoted figures)? Taking 275whp and 278lb-ft as the starting point and assuming a 15% drivetrain loss, it would mean that this 335i outputted approximately 324hp / 327lb-ft torque at the crank (or +24hp / +27lb-ft over the factory quoted numbers).

Like the F30 328i with its N20 engine (dyno results), it's safe to say that the F30 335i and its N55 engine are also underrated from the factory (no surprise).

Check out the dyno run video and graph below.

isn't rwd drivetrain loss more like 10-12% and awd closer to 20%?

Not exactly ground breaking news. The N55 is just a carry over.

Looks in line with past N55 dyno numbers.

Nothing new here. I think we can safely assume that all maufacturers under rate power figures. The N55 is a great engine none the less.

I could be mistaken but if that big fan behind the car would be in front of it, the car could definitely see a few extra horses.

It's well known that on any Dynojet the N55/335i outputs about 270whp.

I had a friend dyno his on a dynojet with a 6AT tranny in early 2011... the result was 270 WHP dead, so it looks like nothing has really changed.

only about 40-50 more horses than a 328.

with the weight and balance differences it make the 335i less tempting

No surprise as 2011 N55 dyno results are similar.

Not to say that this isn't true, but I would just love to see the run done on the same dyno as the one that the N20 ran on...

We should be able to put a 328 on the same dyno here hopefully in the coming weeks once some more 328s are around here for us to pick at. I'd like to see them compared to a 335 on the same dyno myself.

tru, however with the f30 redesigned intake and exhaust its just an interesting point of note ... also more just to rest the minds after reading so many negative reviews on the 335 feeling "weaker" than before

The EAS Dyno results for the 328i returned 226 whp and 230 lb-ft torque which would translate to 265 hp and 270 lb-ft torque at the crank with a 15% drivetrain loss.

Based on this Dyno, the 335i puts out 59 more horses and 57 more lb-ft of torque. Still a lot more power but the gap is much closer than before. For people like me who prefer the power, sound, and feel of an I-6 will still go for the 335i for the extra $3000(Xenons are a must and it's standard with the 335i where on the 328i you have to shell out $4500).

You can't go wrong with either car though.
