![]() Featured on BIMMERPOST.com The 2017 BMW 5er. Well yes and no. The next generation 5er is as I understand going through the motions of design process at the moment so they cannot give a concrete conclusion as we are still some time off from final design freeze , or the final car that will be chosen for production. Of course design is very much influenced by BMW's latest sculptural approach as demonstrated on the Vision Connected Drive concept car which is a preview to the progression of the current cars that began with the BMW 7er in 2008. What is known is that architecture and matrix will be shared with additional models as of the current model that shares extensively a matrix with the 6er and 7er. Again the BMWi influence will be inherited as the 7er leads the beginning of extensive CFRP material technology in not only structure but also with key body panels such as roof , bonnet , trunk lid and door skins will bring the weight down significantly over todays car by a considerable margin. In the meantime the car will receive an LCi in the next twelve months which will see the 5er inherit similar LED technology as the latest 7er , some additional technology updates and engine upgrades and subtle styling changes with a look inspired by the 2010 BMW Active Hybrid 5 Concept. The 5er could also be the basis for a world first high efficiency model powered by BMW's upcoming three cylinder engine. Acknowledgement to AutoZeitung.de. Speculative render attached.

I think they need to go back to the drawing board. The 3 series should follow the 5 series design cues, not the other way around. In order to make the new 5 worth getting, they must set new trends for the lower end models to follow.

Safe to say that the LCI F10 will have the squared off led rings as an option just like the current new bmws... Curious to know if the LCI will have any sheet metal changes and what engine upgrades will it get. My guess the N55HP for the 535 and the N63TU for the 550? Alan

cheeZ!! why so fast ??
The current F10 is not even old yet! in my book: I doesn't even need an LCI until 2014... .... or maybe this Generation's 5 will have two LCI ?! ![]() but no matter, the rendering / speculative 'shop/drawing looks promising! I would approve of the way forward...

Looking back, it is the BMW 1500 & 2002 that leads the 1st gen 5er & the CS coupes. Then comes the E30 which leads the E32/4. After that the E36 leads the E38/9 etc. etc. until the E65. |

So the new f30 3er took after the f10 5er and now the new 5er is going to take after the f30 3er. Circles here

Fuel economy regulations are getting unreasonable. It is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to design and build a car that is satisfying to drive. Carbon fiber is light and strong, but very expensive. I read an analysis of the US fuel economy rules which concluded only electric cars and hybrids will be able to eventually meet the standards.
We will quickly reach a point that at US petrol prices the cost will be unrecoverable through fuel savings. Analysis of presently offered electric cars and plug in hybrids show they do not reach a break even point in 10 years. After that the lithium battery goes bad and the car is nearly worthless.

It mentions nothing about weight sadly, which is the biggest blight on the current model. How do you explain that the current 5 weighs more in all versions than the last model, including the M5 which has a lighter engine?

I doubt it. With rare exception (the E90 comes to mind -- it got a new trunk and hood with its LCI) BMWs of late have not had any sheet metal changes as part of their refresh. The exterior changes will likely be limited to new headlights, taillights, wheels, and front and rear bumper tweaks. If you wanted to, you'd be able to retrofit these changes yourself.

If it's indeed going to look like the F30, then I think they got the hood wrong lol

I think subtle changes. Headlights are probably going to be more rounded like the 7-Series but keep the same shape and perhaps tweak the front bumper a bit. Can't really do much with the rear taillights unless they plan to make the "L"/bulbs more darker, make it more defined like the X5 and the 7-Series. I don't' think they're going to do a huge LCI like they did with the E90; the F01 7-Series didn't change that much.

I hope they do something about the steering. My dad bought my mom an F10 for her birthday in 2010 and even she hates the steering and the suspension (standard suspension). She came from an eight year old Mercedes, so that's really saying something.
It's not the fact that it's EPS, she drove the F30 and thought it was fine I just think they filtered out too much of the feel in the F10 and made it overly light and numb. Otherwise, the car is great and doesn't need much of an update if you ask me especially not a visual update it still looks very fresh. |

This is more of a general question, but seeing how almost everyone hates the steering on the F30 and F10, how much work or how big of a change would it be to tweak it?
