I just noticed that the Stage 2 JB4 is now listed on the BMW website. Is the F10 stage 2 finally out of its BETA classification. I wonder if any changes were made. I know Terry got some new Posi-Taps for those couple of wires.

I just installed the JB4 stage 2 on my 2013 535xi and so far it feels pretty damn sweet. Right off the bat you can feel the extra power. Feels like the car shed a few hundred lbs when it accelerates now. This is at the default 3.5psi over stock setting.

Didn't get to romp on it the car much but so far just normal driving around feels alot nicer than stock.

The install was a breeze. Took me alittle while just to get familiar with the N55 motor but i can probably do the install again in less than 10mins

My problem now is finding a good spot to run the cable/jb4 so it looks more stealth.

did you have to cut into any of the existing wires? My only concern with stage 2 is what will happen if you took the tune out and it would leave a trail based on spliced wires?

Nope. Terry now uses something called posi-taps so you don't have to cut anything. It leaves a small pinhole in two of the wires that you can easily hide.

Look up posi-tap on YouTube.

sounds good... Let us know if you notice any battery drain issue. I had stage 1 installed and I was not really happy with it so I'm thinking of actually trying stage 2. I'm still hoping other tuners will come out with some other alternative, I would love to see a truly noticeable gain.

Where did you put the JB4? Terry had mine mounted under the plastic cowling that covers the CAN wires it taps into. If you lift the rubber strip that runs between the engine and the DME area (at least where the DME was on my N54) you can route the wires under that and hide the brain of the tune. Looks really clean and would not be noticeable unless someone knew exactly what they were looking for.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about the tune after it adapts.

That is where I have mine, but it barely makes it there

I have mine mounted the same spot too but i would agree it barely makes it there. The wiring needs to have alittle more slack imo but its fine.

On the default setting the JB4 is def. noticeable. Even normal driving you can feel the extra oomph when you are in sport mode. Its not staggering like it was when i got my 335 tuned but its noticeable and makes the car feel lighter when you take off.

Did a few WOT pulls this weekend and so far so good. Those that already have stage 1 probably isn't going to see much if any gains going with stage 2 from the dynos floating around here. It may FEEL different since Terry claims boost control is different between the two. No way to know unless someone has both to test back to back.

One thing i noticed that wasn't there before is when i was cruising at a steady speed and then somewhat punched the throttle (going from 20% throttle to lets say 70%) i felt a small stutter and before the car took off. Noticed it twice the second day after i got the tune installed so maybe something was still adapting.

Another thing is my car gave me a warning on the idrive saying that the battery was diminished or something and certain electronics were turned off BEFORE i installed the JB4. My car is a 2013 with 1300 miles on it and my guess this is an issue for those of us that don't drive the car on a daily basis. My car sits M-F and only gets moderate use on the weekends so it may not have enough time to charge the battery sufficiently. After driving around for 30mins the warning went away.

Last night, I had an e55 egging me on for a while. And trust me I know what cars I can and cannot take and a modded e55 is WAY out of my league, so at first I did not bite. But we ended up at a light side by side, so I dropped her into Sport+, brake boosted to about 2k, the light turned green and I barely chirped and took off. His car makes too much power so he was sitting there buring out for a second or 2 so he had to play catch up and just could not pull it off... Now if he knew how to drive his car and was able to get all that power down to the ground, he could of eaten me alive.. But driver does play a huge role in short burst of fun.

I know, I know street racing is bad. It was 2 cars taking off from a light and only jaunted up to 75. There was no weaving in and out of cars or any Fast and Furious style driving

^^ Nice! You are at 4psi or 4.5?

Do you have a bavarian technic scanner to see if the car is throwing any codes? Worthy investment for sure.

I am @ 4.5.

I do not have a BT scanner, I had the BMS cantool for my E60 but gave that away when I gave that car up. I did not think it worked on this car. I am definitely going to pick up one or the other shortly.

Yeah the BT tool works on the F10 but has limited functionality compared to what it could do on the E9X platform. Still able to read codes and delete them but not the shadow codes area yet. When i emailed them they said thats work in progress... I am going to drive the car for a few weeks and then see if the BT tool picks up any codes due to the tune.

So I wanted to crank up the boost with my S2 tune and according to Terry I can not do so like you S1 guys !

When I hook up my JB4 to my laptop using the latest firmware it doesn't even give me the option to change boost over stock. According to Terry it's either map 1 or map 2.

What's the difference between map 1 and 2?

I believe map 1 is 12.5psi and map 2 is 14.5psi. Not sure what else is different. None of this JB stuff is explained very well for us F10 guys. Terry responds quick buts its 2 or 3 word answers that doesn't tell you the whole picture of things. The F10 just isn't important to him which is too bad.

Wow, that is new to me! I am sure the Stage 2 will have more boost control soon. I am still surprised to hear that the S1 has more laptop boost user control, especially after hearing how much stronger and more powerful the hardware is on the S2 vs the S1. I am planning on getting a tune before Christmas. I am still debating between S1 and S2; however, the S1 is now leading thanks to that news flash.

RambleJ, strong work in representing the F10! That's what the E55 gets for having so much NA low end torque. Lol. Boost or bust baby!!

In defense to Terry, the market and profit for the F10 N55 is almost negligible in comparison to all the other series and platforms buying tunes. I am sure we will see the benefit of the F30....when people start buying the 335 instead of the 328!!

After doing some reading on N54tech (Terry's board) it seems like S2 does in fact control boost in a different manner compared to S1. Since Terry doesn't recommend people turning up the boost from the default +3.5psi for S1 power wise both versions will be similar. Its just that with S2 you don't have the option to risk upping the boost like you do with S1. All in all i am happy with the way the car feels with S2. Its a noticeable change from stock for sure. Considering S2 only takes another 5-10mins to install i would just jump to S2 since the feel of the tune is suppose to be better.

Reviews on the 335 forums seems to all say that going from S1 to S2 felt a lot smoother and better even though peak power isn't really reflected.

The install difference is literally:

1)loosen 10mm nut to tap the power wire into (30secs)
2)loosen a 14mm nut for the ground wire (30secs)
3)install two positap wires to the car (5mins if that

The rest of the install is identical between S1 and S2.

Alan

Alan,
I have stage 1 already installed. So if I wanted to change to Stage 2 then I would leave my harness attached in place and just change the control unit and do the extra stuff with the wiring? Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not sure. Contact Terry to be sure (terry@burgertuning.com)

S2 has 4 extra wires coming out of the wire harness so the whole harness might need to be switched out.

Breakin the law @ 4.5... Envelopes were meant to be pushed and I guess i am the stage 1 guy doing it.
Also take into conderation Terry does all of testing in CA and they only have 91. So raising the boost past certain points with lower octane is definitely a recipe for some sweet engine knocking..

I personally wouldn't mind cranking up the boost a little myself if I had the option to but it is what it is for now with S2.

Hopefully when people do more testing with map 2 it would be more stable for people like us to try out on 93 octane gas with maybe some octane boosters or a splash of race gas lol
