M5 muffler on 550i question

First I want to apologize if this has been addressed before. I'm looking around and can't find the answer, and obviously I'm new to this.

For those with M5 muffler to their 550i / M Sport bumper. Can you run that without doing the M5 diffuser? I see everyone that did it has also change their diffuser. Is it a fitment thing?

Thanks in advance.

I would think it just has to do with your tip size. I think I saw a 550 bumper with quad tips. A good number of us here are going to the M5 diffuser for looks.

My understanding is that the inner set of the quad tips set in further which doesn't match without the diffuser.

primarily they swap the diffuser out more for the aggressive looks. when the muffler shop installs the M5 muffler it should just line up or they could make the necessary adjustments for example some guys like to have the tips stick further out more than running flush with the diffuser.

on the M5 the exhaust sits more inward...not on the normal 5 series tho...that's a totally different from what the OP is asking

here the M5 exhaust sits almost flush with the diffuser

here it sits out an inch or so

Here Lacster was i believe the first to get the M5 diffuser on back in the day with his custom exhaust setup but basically you can see how his tips are further out from the M5 diffuser

on this 550 the tips are barely flush with the M5 diffuser

just remember your OEM 550 diffuser is pretty flush with your bumper so the M5 exhaust will probably stick out a couple inches and if you decide to get the M5 diffuser as you notice it has a little lip or curve where the tips line up under

The stock M5 mufflers are made to sit 1" closer inward than your stock 550 tips/diffuser opening. If you don't want to buy a new diffuser, the muffler shop can easily install them to fit your existing 550 opening. Stock M5 tips (~3" each) will fit fine inside the trapezoid opening. Down the line if you decide to buy a diffuser, you'll just have to buy one made for non-M5's. If you decide to buy a M5 or replica diffuser, the shop will have to move your mufflers 1" inward.

you can if you cut the diffuser properly, but it won't be even cuz the tips don't line up with the muffler...

see pics of my 14 550i with m5 comp package exhaust and standard 550i msport diffuser

you can see on the left where they cut the diffuser...

doesn't look bad, as he did a decent job and kept it symmetrical on both sides, but up close you can see it doesn't line up..

imho best to do m5 (or aftermarket diffuser made for m5)

wow. Thanks everyone. Those are some really useful informations.
I used to like to see a lot of the exhaust. Now that I'm older, I find myself liking things to be more subtle on styling, just small touches here and there. I might change again.... but I feel like I would enjoy having the M5 muffler sitting flush to the M Sport diffuser. I just want to know if that's even possible.
So let me see if I have this correct. I can make that happen as long as my exhaust shop guy is good enough to make that fit. Yes?

Exactly. I just recently installed M5 mufflers on my 535i and I made sure that my mufflers sat that exactly where I wanted them to.

not a 550 but you get the point:

If you stay in the LA area head to 3c performance...Look for Luis, he did a custom exhaust delete on my 535, sounds great and he cut the diffuser to fit 4" quad tips, they stick out just a Lil and his cutting skills are spot on. I like the welds he did also.

I have quad tips on stock diffuser with no cutting at all. They fit perfectly. Not M5 exhaust, just AA but they're still 90mm tips. Not small lol
