I thought this was going to be some sort of epic solution to get the same usability out of the cradle.

Oh well.
Are you always this much of a d!ck?

The damn thing will charge your phone and connect to idrive. The only thing missing is the antenna.

So, I believe we do have an epic solution PAM, my man.

Last I heard was late spring/summer. But I never really trust those estimates from the dealer.

@OP
The best thing about your solution is being able to place the phone without having to remove the cover. That annoyance alone made me stop using my 3G cradle. BMW is eons behind Toyota/Acura and others in integrating all this stuff so it can work smoothly. It's like when we had to write code to make the printer work with our computer just absurd.

@BMW
This is how all of this should work: Buy iPhone - any kind - plug into receptacle and iPhone screen and all functions are instantly available via iDrive. While you are at it, fix the seriously flawed Nav system you now have

Detail question about BMW APPS vs BMW "Connected"

I'm able to successfully unlock my car, flash my headlights, sound the horn, and send Map data directly to the car. It all works just as before.

The BMW Connected app works as well, with the exception of the "Plugin" capability. I'm able to view my calendar on iDrive, and perform a host of other functions (facebook, etc.). What I'm NOT able to do is get access to my "Genius" playlists or other direct iPod-out functionality since BMW doesn't support that capability via the new Lightning connector.
I am told that BMW Connected requires BMWs "Convenience" plan at an additional $199/yr (in addition to the 'free' BMW Assist plan that is bundled in a "new" BMW).

That said, I'm an Android phone user (Bionic w/ICS) and am also told that in order to make use of BMW APPS I must have an iPhone. [the BMW Apps option was included in the Tech pkg on my '13 535 xDrive]. All that and there is a 'rumor' that BMW may further extend its technology and enable Android phone users to utilize BMW APPS - but not until sometime in 2014. I guess all that engineering takes time .

Verizon would love to sell me an iPhone and even though I'm a stockholder in both companies I've just never warmed up to Apple products.

I'm open to words of advice / clarification / confirmation

BTW, I've been hanging out on the e60 Forum for years but now the '07 530xi has just been replaced by a '13 535xDrive

too little, too late!!

new iphone will probably come out in October of this year or then this adapter won't be compatible anymore.
I heard one of the BMW head designers say that they look 5-10 years ahead when they design car and need around them, but in case of phones, it seems like they are just trying to catch up to the market and failing.
I love BMW, but this is letting themselves down here.
here is a tip, BMW, make it $10 item, not $400

Just a quick note for those who have iphone 5's. rather than use my metre long apple lightning cable i went to an apple store in the uk and bought a blue, usb -> lighting cable made by 'incase' about £15, but soo worth it. It is the perfect length from usb plug to where the phone rests. About 6" i think.

Found link:

My windows phone works great in BMW.
FUNNY, BMW offers the iphone cradle and all and really doesn't deliver.

Everyone who thinks that DYI or cable is an equal option are wrong.

The main reason to get a cradle is an external aerial connection. Yes, there is no any direct port attachment in an iPhone, but induction antenna works fine.

I disassembled old 3 and 4S cradles and yes, induction antenna connected to shark fin is inside, and yes, I've got perfect signal level 99% of time I'm using my iPhone in a cradle but very frequent (on a motorways especially) signal loss without.

Nice job!

Have two questions,

- had a look at my base plate but not sure how it gets removed, does it just clip in and out?

- also, do you think the bulge at the end of the base plate where the lightning cable sticks out of could accomodate/store the excess length of the lightning cable?

Display of album art

Question? I am struggling to display album art on my BMW 330D 2012 car. I understand you need the 6NR option which I believe consists of a cable link between the centre console and the combo box. My car does not have 6NR but I have discovered that it can be retrofitted (for 300 euro in Bristol UK) - which is what I am planning to do. Question is has anyone managed to display album art and office services without 6NR ??

- Press the button marked with the arrow shape (Front of the base plate). See my original picture.
- No the bulge is not big enough to hold the original Apple cable. I think you can now buy shorter USB Lightning cables (about 3 - 6 inch length only). The excess cable from these short lengths can be accommodated inside the bulge.
