I am about pulling the trigger on buying a 2011 550i by trading my 2007 335i.
Perhaps fellow F10 folks here can chime in on why I shouldn't pull the trigger? Also, what are the common problems with a 2011 550i compare to the infamous HPFF and the water pump on 335i (yes I should use the search button but I want more concrete info)? |

The big issue with the 550i will be its insatiable appetite for gas.

Be aware that the motor burns oil. I've gone through a quart every 700 miles which the dealer claims is normal. I think mine burns more than most though but it is a pain in the ass always needing to be close to oil.
It should be noted that I have dinan stage 3 and drive pretty aggressive so that might affect it.

Yeah....the gas hog is dully noted and expected actually.
As far as burning oil, the first 2000 miles of my 335i also burned oil then it never occurred again. What else trouble spots on 550i? I feel like I am missing something here. ![]() Due diligence prior to purchase.....that is. ![]() |

I've been an owner of f10 BMW 550i since dec 2010. Love the car and they seem to hold there value according the kbb. If I had the option I would have gone for the m5 but again these two cars are not really in the same category. M5 is on a league of its own. I'm actually contemplating getting a 535d (33 us mpg compared to the 15mpg or so im getting sounds good to me) next year when they come to the states. 550i is thirsty for gas and oil lol.

Put my first quart of oil in this week -- 7500 miles. Can get about 20 mpg if I'm not driving too aggressive.
If you're moving up from a 3 series, you'll obviously find it larger and you may feel a bit disconnected. I prefer the size. My one complaint is leaving it parked in public areas. I realize this is the same for any decent car, but it is pretty wide. Not living in Europe and having bigger parking spaces will help though. All in all, zero regrets. |

I love my AW Dinan 550 and no problems with the car so far...Fast, beautiful and comfortable. Get it and don't look back, but if you want the M5, then I recommend getting it instead of 550!

I'm buying a cpo'd 2011 550i tomorrow if all goes as planned. I chose this over a new 335i msport that I had a build spot for. I haven't seen the car in person yet so fingers crossed. I wanted to really stretch my dollar so I'm taking a risk and going with an early build 2011. 4/28/2010. I tried to reduce that risk by finding a low mile, 1 owner car which I finally did. I've never driven a rwd 550i because they are nonexistent in my area so I'm hoping to be impressed.
Other than the car's history you'll want to pay close attention to how the car tracks when you let go of the wheel. Lots of complaints about pulling to the right. Also make sure the cars starts almost instantly. Stay away from long crank cars. Lastly keep an eye out for throttle tip in. On our 2011 x3 it's horrible. Heard it can be bad on these too. With that being said the throttle response won't necessarily deter me. |
