BMW 5 Series F10 LCI Facelift/Update Previewed in Render

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
The latest Autobild previews the LCI BMW 5er which shows what lies behind the camouflage tape.

As per modern BMW and integrated as EfficientDynamics. The 5er LCI inherits Air curtains , as well as new detailing, a re-profiled nose that is slightly faired in headlamps and optional LED adaptive headlights.

The change is not radical as the 5er maintains its position as the segment benchmark. Of course there will be significant changes to engine options (550i Gets N63Tu Engine, 535d for US [source]) and for entry customers the BMW 518 makes a return since the E34 albeit in diesel form.

Engineers have also incorporated slight changes to the car's steering as well as incorporating BMW's cylinder dimming introduced on the 7er.

Both the BMW 5er Touring and 5er Gran Turismo will debut at the same time.

Admin Edit:

We have information which shows production for the F10 LCI as beginning in July 2013, with deliveries starting in August/September of 2013.

I hope its a bit more than slight changes to the cars steering.

Also the cylinder dimming would be valvetronic right? If so, doesn't the 5er already have valvetronic in all of its engines?

Valvetronic is completely different than cylinder dimming/deactivation.

Dimming and deactivation are not the same thing.

This is from the release of the inline 3 engine. Apparently it is part of the Valvetronic technology. Scott must have been referring to a further development of it.

Quote:
A proven concept with a great future: don’t switch it off - dim it.

"In stark contrast to other approaches, the VALVETRONIC system delivers gains in efficiency, including improved engine response and better engine torque development over the entire rpm range of the engine. The throttle-free load control system works like a dimmer, affecting all cylinders equally; the engine continues to run smoothly and its acoustic properties remain unchanged, something which cannot be said of cylinder deactivation. “Dimming instead of switching off” results in minimum fuel consumption and emission levels, while maximum dynamics, matchless comfort and sophisticated power delivery are achieved. In addition, this proprietary BMW technology can be used in engines of different sizes and power. In a nutshell, these new engine modules put the BMW Group in a position to configure engines of an optimal size, providing an ideal solution for each individual application."

What is "cylinder dimming" -- any additional information?

The 550i still uses the N63 which does not have Valvetronic. The LCI 550i will get the N63Tu which does have Valvetronic.

I don't like the new look of front at all, ie zagged kidney grills, squared "eyes", that added line from lights to kidneys - it ruins the soft lines... Glad I did get the MY2013...

What engines will be offered in the states?

all the rumors made it seem like the N55 successor will debut in the 4 series coupe and the LCI 5 but recent VIN searches doesn't seem to suggest that being true anymore.

I always get a kick out of comments like this. The car company redesigns a model, and out come all the people who just bought a pre-redesign version talking about what a step in the wrong direction the redesign is. Seems like some pretty clear psychology at play there.

Not at all, that I am biased coz I have the current model, its just my opinion. Am I not allowed to like softer lines of current model?!? I know that LCI cycle needs some redesign, something new to make it attractive to new customers. But for ME, the current design defiantly yields more seamless lines in the front, and angle eyes are just nicer being round and thin. Also zagged kidney grilles and that "aggressive" line from headlights to kidneys are not my cup of tea.

But I do like the improvements that LCI will bring, steering optimization, added power, protective air curtains, etc... Just don't like the design, thats all.

By comparing what the F01 7-Series did for the LCI, this render looks plausible. I read somewhere that the 5-Series LCI headlights would get similar treatment as the 7-Series (the droopy look). The lower bumper also looks similar to what was done on the 7-Series but was toned down to fit the overall appearance of the exterior. Overall, I think this is something we could realistically see but obviously more tailored to fit the exterior of the F10.

I wonder how much better will the LCI steering feel.

Hopefully it's a big improvement rather than a minor one to say. The A6 already has better steering feel and the early reviews say the E-Class improved a lot in terms of driving (steering feeling included) so BMW has some work to do.

The taillights will get a subtle change to make the tubes contrast a bit more with the rest of the assembly, though the shape of the taillights and the tubes themselves won't change (at least, not from what I can tell from the spy shots). I would expect a new set of wheel options, and wouldn't be surprised to see a subtle update to the rear bumper along the trailing edge as well.

By the way, I don't see any air curtains in the preview render. Did they just neglect that part, or is BMW's definition of air curtains changing now? (I was expecting 1M/E82 LCI/F01 LCI style vertical slats).

Don't loose sleep over this. Autobild renders often miss the target when it comes to the real deal. Honestly the original is much more classy if you ask me, however we all know that f10/f11 Achilles heel is the steering so I'm really excited to see if that has improved over the competition. I really hope that the lci exterior gets the 'angel eyes' but keeps the most of the old looks.

It will or should if you go by the 7-Series LCI. Everything pretty much stayed the same except for the front and very minor changes in the rear.

Can someone please explain why the LCI parts always have the weird squiggly paint?

I am sure not the comment is as biased as you put it. I for one no longer own the pre-lci and still thinks the pre-lci looked better.....
