For my LCI 535xi, is the collision warning system active or passive? Will the system apply the breaks if I neglect to? I'm scared to try to find out. I get the red vehicle light in my instrument cluster and HUD when I get to close to an upcoming vehicle. If the vehicle is suppose to intervene, how close does it get before intervening?

The collision warning system has its limits and is designed to assist the driver and should not be relied on or trusted to make the stop for you. Two snapshots from the LCI training manual are below. Seems to contradict its self on the amount of braking force that is used to reduce or prevent an accident.

Now i'm confused.....
My LCI has PDC sensors in the bumpers with the back up camera only. Does my car have any Brake Intervention safety feature? There was one time where was coming to a stop sign and a car going perpendicular to me was speeding by. I saw the car and was pressing the brakes but then i felt the car really stomp on the brakes on its own to stop the car quicker than I would have with my own braking force applied to the pedal. I thought it felt strange but this might be the car doing its thing? Alan

That's Brake Assist:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brake_Assist The collision warning is optional on vehicles with Driver Assistance Plus and "Active Driving Assistant" |

I don't think it is practical to experiment with any of these things -- that's why I lumped them with the air bags. If you want to know in detail what equipment your car has, I suggest using BMWVIN.com, a website where you can enter the last 7 digits of your car's VIN and get a readout, essentially, of the manufacturing bill of materials, at least as far as non-standard items are concerned.

I've been following this discussion as I was also very interested in the answer for ordering a vehicle. I found this information which is the perfect answer I was looking for and wanted to share with anyone still in doubts and apologies if somebody has already answered and this is redundant!
So, there are two types of collision warning: #1: Collision warning WITHOUT braking function which it is part of the Driver Assistance Plus package. This is camera based and uses the same camera used for the LDW. #2: Collision warning WITH braking function and for this one you need, in addition to Driver Assistance Plus, ACC with Stop & Go. This one is radar based. The system uses the same radar for the Adaptive Cruise Control and this one DOES HAVE a braking function. The text below is copied from the document where I read this information: "In contrast to Collision Warning with braking function, the camera-based collision warning system (5AS) does NOT automatically apply brake intervention. The acute warning does not relieve the driver of their responsibility to adapt their driving speed and driving style to the road and traffic conditions." Hope this helps! ![]() |

fyi, i have the Adaptive Cruise Control and DAP. i think that's why it beeps at me and powers up the brakes when it sees a possible collision
Btw ,,, IMO Adaptive Cruise Control is a great option and i hope my next car has it as i keep moving to spoiled status |

My LCI has DAP ACC with the extra $$$$ feature for Stop and Go. It brakes to a stop. It also says that it warns and brakes for pedestrians in the daytime (nightime is extra $$$$). The manual states it will stop even if the adaptive cruise control is not turned on (steering wheel button). I have mine set to "Early Warning". It brakes at the time I normally would so it makes testing it easy. If you don't feel it brake when you normally would, it's not going to brake to a stop.
UPDATE: My car brakes when I use Adaptive Cruise Control. In as much as it can be tested, my car DOES NOT brake when ACC is not active (using steering wheel controls). I've updated the thread below. Last edited by ErnestHouse; 11-02-2013 at 04:29 AM.. Reason: Added UPDATE |

Combined with the HUD, they improve your margins of safety. If you are directly behind the vehicle slowing down, your only indication is an increase in the apparent size, in two dimensions, of the rear end of the vehicle in front of you. You may not pick up on the fact the vehicle is slowing. The warning is awesome, especially with the HUD. The brake function is icing on the cake, but should never be relied upon for casual stopping any more than one relies on the airbags for routine stopping. Nevertheless, after owning 2 BMW's (one with collision warning and the other with collision mitigation) for the past 4 years, I can tell you with absolute certainty that it has reduced those 1 or 2 close calls you have each year to zero! In other situations, it wasn't relied upon to prevent an accident, but it did improve my margin of safety by 100% meaning it gives you nearly double the time to react. These systems as implemented are game changers. Because the warning is so useful, I have yet to cross into needing brake intervention after 1 year of ownership. I would put these system up there with 'must have' and totally worth every penny! |

I tried testing the City Forward Collision Mitigation and Forward Collision Warning. I only ever get the Red Car warning. No audible warning or steering wheel vibration or braking. It's hard to test without risking a collision. Has anyone gotten the audible, steering wheel vibration or braking? |

Maybe you've overlooked? Mine gets delivered next Saturday -- will definitely confirm it's on my 535d as I have it now and it's a great safety feature. .

On a lark I typed my VIN into bmwarchive.org instead of copy/paste and got results. The listing shows I have 5AT and is labeled as Driving Assistant Plus. My car clearly has ACC+Stop and Go as the button is there and it works. It also has Lane Departure which also works. Yet neither are listed in the report. But Speed Limit is listed separately. So there's no way to know from that VIN report which safety features are in the car and the order guide doesn't say exactly what is in "Active Driving Assistant" which I am supposed to have as part of
ACC Stop & Go with Active Driving Assistant". Clearly the car does not have Blind Spot Detection as it lacks the button and warning lights in the mirrors. Yet I have Lane Departure which is also not listed in the VIN report. The 5GT manual has two descriptions in it: Collision Warning with Braking Function and Collision Warning with City Braking Function. Both describe two stage warning of Red Car indicator then flashing indicator with audible signal. In the City Braking chapter, the section describing "Braking Intervention" says "…if there is a risk of collision, the system can assist with a slight braking intervention. The intervention can bring a vehicle traveling at a slow speed to a complete stop." In the non-City Braking chapter it says "…if there is danger of a collision, is accompanied by a braking intervention. … The intervention can bring a vehicle to a complete stop."
