Isn't it simply the standard 520d is built to a price, to compete in the market place. There are plenty of options, if you want the full cream.
If you check the specs' of the 320d and 520d you realise the 520d is giving far better value, as standard specification. They have to cut the cloth somewhere, or the 3-series will look even more highly inflated.
