Back in the 80's/90's overtaking was imho even more difficult. Especially with drivers like Senna who were masters in making his car as wide as possible.
That is why DRS finally came along (2010 or so?).
The problem now is that cars can't follow so closely because tyres overheat.
Car's get so complicated aero wise. But if you put a stop on that you're severely limiting the technical evolution and you're basically turning the cars into cup cars. Nobody watches that. People watch F1 because it's the pinnacle.
