I've seen multiple over heating problems on 335i, all we're fixed with water pump/thermostat change. Don't be fooled with the stream from the reservoir, as you said it would be nice if there was a rpm sensor to see if the pump is actually working. Also make sure you bleed the coolant system properly as air pockets will give you overheating problems too.
