You encouraged me to research this cooler thing further. It seems that our cars came with an EGR cooler that should be located near the intake side of the engine. At times it cools exhaust gases before they enter the intake side of the engine. For some reason, I imagine this cooler to be located further down the exhaust system near the sections that burn off soot or inject DEF into the exhaust gases (to reduce the NO2 coming out of the tail pipe). There are a few video on YouTube (where else) demonstrating the cooler in action. Presumably, the recall involves something in or around the cooler or the entire cooler. Moreover, it must involve something common to both the 4 and 6 cylinder BMW diesels.
