UPDATE:

Connected ISTA and performed the very same ride height reset. Interestingly my ride heights measured 611 R and 612F this morning.

The important part is that during the programming when ISTA told me what ride height the car though it had both front and rear were within 2mm of what my tape measure said. So, I'm going to guess that somehow, bad front sensor calibration data got stored in the ICM. No idea how, when, or how long its been like that.

The possibility exists, I suppose, that MUCH earlier work on the car (dealer replaced both front struts for free under warranty many years ago) led to the ride height sensor not being connected properly mechanically and then the system was calibrated. Perhaps I reassembled it correctly and it was off by 40mm?

At any rate - I recommend using ISTA to perform ride height calibration after doing suspension work and letting things settle.
