I actually don't think they're genuinely offended. I think we have a generation of attention seekers, and 'being offended' achieves that without putting forth any effort at all.
Basically, if you're lazy but you want recognition, just complain about something really loud. It's infantile behavior, but here we are.
And back on topic - yes, F1 is totally neutered and boring now. I got into F1 in the very late 1990s. I loved it because it was an automotive freak show; I was watching things happen that shouldn't supposed to be happening. Now I watch cars that don't rev much higher than an RX-7 on youtube.
