rod bearing failures on normal engines like the n55 happen, but are very well and almost certainly resulted from driving aggressively with a 0w oil in the engine. use 5w40.
The 0W is only a 0 weight when the oil is cold (W after all stands for winter). As it warms up it "morphs" into whatever the higher number is. In SoCal we can run a straight 30 weight (no "Winter" weight needed) with no issues.

I always use what the manufacturer recommends as they have lots of people with lots of letters after their names to make sure the oil formulation is correct for the longevity of the engine. MOST manufacturers these days design at least a 150K engine life. Obviously good care and proper fluid changes will increase that.
