That penalty should be waived in case of engine blow-up IMO. You take the penalty if you don't want to take the risk. A DNF is more severe than a grid penalty, so getting hit with BOTH doesn't sound fair to me. It's the equivalent of kicking somebody when he's down. Oh well.
