Tesla Superchargers use a proprietary charging plug. (Not the industry standard J1772). Adapters to insert a J1772 into a Tesla are fairly common, but adapters to plug a Tesla Plug into a J1772 are much harder to find. (I do have one though to be able to plug my i8 into my Tesla home charger).
...and Tesla Superchargers are only free for Model-S and Model-X models.
I don't see how Musk can open Tesla Chargers to other vehicles if the plugs don't fit. Maybe he expects folks to have these relatively hard-to-find adapters?
Over 70% of EV owners charge at home anyway. I've had a Model-X for over 3 years now and I've never even SEEN a Supercharger much less used one. We just plug our car in every night. Done. (We don't use our EV for long road trips - we have ICE vehicles for that...)
