The impact of changing the PAN (where the filter is) may have had a larger impact than changing of 40% of the fluid.
Either way - filter and fluid are not LIFETIME and should be serviced. I only had 70,000km on my 535 and I noticed improvements.
It was a half-day job, but not all that bad. Better than I was expecting based on similar work I performed on an E39 in the past.
