I've had both initially, and I used my friends tunning box just to try it out before the remap. Essentially all they do is alter the fuel ratio as the tuning box plugs in between the injector rail.
Got my old 535d remapped afterwards , car ran so much better, not even worth comparing it to a tuning box.
