I would have recommended the fuel filter first.....the key to this is the "feels like a manual shifting" which is a "long" hesitation vs one felt by a bad coil.....
So if you haven't done the fuel filter yet, that would be my recommendation....

[Edit] - I've had this issue also when a ground strap for the coil harness was loose......worth checking.
