So sorry to hear this. You have to wonder if the oil pump failure wasn't somehow related to the recall issues? A total engine failure at 74k is pretty crazy - seems like even if this is not timing chain related it's a good case for some good will relief from BMW.

Back in the day, my 1993 318i, the head gasket started leaking at about 55,000 miles and BMW handled it 100% as goodwill. There were no active recalls etc. at the time in my case, so you never know until you give it a try.
