You need to force the iDrive to reboot. You used to be able to do this by holding the volume knob in for 30 seconds until the screen when black, but depending on software revision of your car, this may no longer work. In this case, try the following:

1. Hold idrive knob in for 30 seconds.
2. Turn off car.
3. Exit and lock
4. Wait 10 minutes.

When you unlock the car, you will see the BMW logo on idrive---this means a reboot. Normally, this clears the trouble and Bluetooth will start working.
