I recall an independent BMW garage (UK) stripping an N55 to inspect and perform a walnut blasting. They were surprised how clean it was in and around the inlet valves, compared to running the N54 with similar use/mileage.
BMW claimed to improve the crankcase ventilation system in the N55 design.
