Finally test drove the 6GC....

Just test drove the 640i GC couple minutes ago. Route was from Wanchai North->Garden Road->Stubbs Road and back. The demo car was standard HK spec for 640i. Some thoughts, comparing to my F10 550i...

1) Driver comfort. The 640i had standard seats, so not as comfortable as the comfort seats that I had on my 550i. A bit more confined than the F10 but should be expected, as this is positioned as a coupe. But for a coupe, driver space is actually very abundant.

2) Interior storage space and amenities. The 640i GC does not have the small vanity compartment on the driver side, so need to put sunglasses in the central glove box, which is way bigger than the F10. Just need some getting used to. Also missing from the 640i GC is the 12V outlet from the front cup holders. The 12V outlet is positioned in the small round coin holder behind the shift knob, which makes running a power cable to a dash mounted phone/detector a bit more problematic. But otherwise, no complains. Feels more luxury than the F10.

3) Electronics, the 640i seems to have the extended black panel on dash. The iDrive also now shows efficient dynamics statistics. Otherwise, very similar to the F10. The demo car did not have NAV so it has the small screen. I was expecting that the small screen will look really bad, but it is actually not too noticeable......

4) Driving dynamics. OK. This is the main part. In short, it is everything that the F10 should have been...... Test car is HK standard so does not have IAS or AD. However, I don't feel that this car needs any of those at all! The suspension on the 640i GC is near perfect! None of those boat ride feeling from the F10. Cornering response is great even in comfort mode! Sport is quite stiff on the steering. And the car was flat at all the corners on Stubbs Road. Perfection! Like all new BMW, test car came with runflats. But I did not feel the ride was harsh. More comfort than my M3 with PSS10, but planted and flat, and none of those boat ride feeling from the F10, even in stock. Hmm... I like it

5) Power.... To be hornest, if I had the opportunity to test drive the 640i GC first, I may not have ordered the 650i GC. The power from the 640i was abundant, evidenced by effortless acceleration up the Garden Road. No problem merging from cross-roads to up hill traffic. Responsive when stepped on. The 550i is a tad more effortless than the 640i GC. But the 640i GC is more than sufficient for me..... As expected, car is more responsive when switched into sport mode, but even the comfort mode feels like sport on the F10.....

6) Driver's visibility. The rear window is WAY SMALL! Feels like I have worse visibility out the rear than my M3 vert. So it does feel a bit less open. In hindsight, I should have ordered Lane Departure warning with the car to compensate and ditch the IAS, maybe even the AD on this car. Especially now that KW start making electronic controllable coilovers for BMWs as well....

In short, I ordered the 6GC because I believed that it is the perfect car for me. And the test drive confirmed it. The 640i GC is a car for the driver, which is what I wanted. Originally, I was expecting that the 6GC would be more like a F10 series which a sport exterior. But it turns out that the handling and driving feel is completely different (in a good way) than the F10. Although, physcially larger than the F10, the way it handled on stubbs road is more like my M3, which reminds me of the A7 that I test drove last year. And 6GC handles and feels WAY WAY better than the A7, even comparing to the A7 quattro.

And now, the only thing that I have gripes with is..... WHEN THE HECK AM I GOING TO GET MY CAR
