However, Mclaren is in a tough spot in terms of the 2nd seat options. They have contractual clauses to deal with. Understandably they're pretty invested in Norris and had to put him in the car or risk letting him go to Red Bull/Torro Rosso.

Dealing Norris to immediately get James Key wouldn't work since Red Bull would probably just stall and get Norris anyways by virtue of seat confirmation deadline lapsing therefor getting Norris at no cost.

Not sure about the Sainz move to replace Alonso. Sainz isn't beating Hulk at Renault. Maybe Vandoorne/Norris was the more logical and patient move. We'll never know. The team is rebuilding, perhaps Sainz creates a draw from the marketing side which helps in bringing in sponsors - at least more than Vandoorne.
