I've never been able to tell a bad sway bar link by looking at it. Sometimes you can get a bad link to click by rocking the car side to side, but other than that I just undo them and check the joint for tightness. It's usually the end that connects to the sway bar that wears first since it's the one that turns most as the suspension moves.
