I may be wrong here but isn't it the case that m models used to run in with running in oil to bed them in? As in mineral oil so the parts settle in rather than the knats piss long life we all use?

Perhaps fully synthetic long life from new doesn't allow parts to bed in properly and that's why often the consumption gets better as the cars get older, and run in? Piston rings and bores etc settle? I know modern tolerances mean there's supposedly no such thing nowadays, but seriously this must be rubbish.

Still on the bright side so much oil consumption for some means fresher oil :-)

Mine uses none; it's an n53 though so not the same as your bad boys - still costs the same here in Europe as a us 550 though (gulp)....
