I don't think it is really a pompous M owner thing.
Today I would say I have an M3 because I do.
Before I would say I had a 4 series M Sport, because that is what it was.
And I don't think I have ever met anyone that was really trying to flex on their car being an M and even if they did who cares?
Did they pick up your chick or something? Seems like a petty thing to whine over.
For what it is worth though I never considered my car an M car.
